GSSport 2024: Accelerating sustainability through sport

According to research by Global Sustainable Sport (GSS) , over 800 sports organisations are actively developing their sustainability strategies, but less than 10% of these have a comprehensive strategy that covers all aspects of sports sustainability. Sport is undervaluing its sustainability value and missing opportunities to maximise its impact and outcomes.

Sport needs a broad framework to describe its sustainable value.

GSS 's?new accelerator programme, GSSport 2024 ,?aims to assist stakeholders from across?the sports industry in developing sustainability strategies?and improving their social, environmental and commercial outcomes.

GSSport 2024 will offer a series of online workshops covering the 7 Sustainable Pillars of Sport and Purpose, developed by GSS , followed by an in-person congress in Munich on?June 26-27, during UEFA Euro 2024.

Register for GSSport 2024 today and join the 800+ organisations that are driving sustainability around the world, and help deliver a more sustainable future for sport and the planet.

“Don’t sponsor” – The ‘Amazon Desert Rally’. A powerful call by sport to protect one of the great natural regions of the world

“Don’t sponsor” – The ‘Amazon Desert Rally’. A powerful call by sport to protect one of the great natural regions of the world...

The combination of global climate change and deforestation is having a devastating impact on the #Amazon basin, resulting in vast sections of Amazonian rivers losing over 130 millions litres of water in 2023, and in some cases becoming dry desert-like river beds.

According to research by IPAM Amazonia - Amazon Environmental Research Institute , half of the countries in the Amazon region have seen a 30% reduction in surface water in the last 40 years. Deforestation and global climate change is impacting the local climate in the region creating a vicious spiral of increasing temperatures, reduced precipitation, longer dry periods and drier forests becoming more flammable resulting in frequent forest fires.

To highlight the severity of the problem that the Amazon region faces, a group of indigenous people have teamed up with the Stock Car Pro series to use rallying to showcase the impact that climate change and deforestation is having on the rivers and the region as a whole.

“Everyone loves sport and sport is the way we think we can get this message out to the people of the world about the huge environmental crisis we are facing in the Amazon region,” stated Paulo Moutinho , senior researcher at IPAM.

How World Rugby’s new Rugby for Nature initiative plans to protect the natural world

How World Rugby ’s new Rugby for Nature initiative plans to protect the natural world...

#Nature was in the spotlight this week as millions around the world, from sport and beyond, marked Earth Day.

But, as?Global Sustainable Sport?reported last week, the emphasis on protecting nature isn’t confined to an annual celebration.

In fact, the sports industry is becoming increasingly aware of the need to integrate nature and biodiversity protection into wider #sustainability strategies.

This week, World Rugby joined other sports in the industry – including football, biathlon, and golf – in these efforts by launching its new?Rugby for Nature toolkit, which uses a rugby-based ‘game plan’ to encourage rugby communities to take action to protect the environment.

So what is the new toolkit about, and can action plans tailored to individual sports really help tackle the #biodiversity crisis?

“The toolkit was actually inspired by discussions with people at Oxford Harlequins rugby club in England who were passionate about protecting the natural environment but lacked simple guidance to get started,” Jaime M. , Diversity & Inclusion Manager at World Rugby, tells Global Sustainable Sport . “It triggered us to think about a resource that all rugby clubs and communities from grassroot to professional levels could easily understand and implement, with a limited budget.”

Pittsburgh Penguins’ pledge to be more sustainable

Pittsburgh Penguins’ pledge to be more sustainable...

While the latest Pittsburgh Penguins National Hockey League (NHL) ’s season didn’t quite go to plan after finishing comfortably mid-table in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference and just missing out on the play-offs, one area in which the ice hockey franchise has progressed, is #sustainability .

The 2023-24 campaign saw the advancement of the Penguins Pledge – a sustainability initiative designed to bolster the outlet’s commitment to improving its environmental, social and governance (#ESG ) efforts.

Launched last year, the Penguins Pledge is a collaboration between the ice hockey team itself, and key sponsors and partners.

The Pledge builds on previous sustainability efforts, which also saw the Penguins’ PPG Paints Arena become the first – and only – NHL venue to be LEED Gold certified.“Sustainability is a key part of how PPG does business – and delivers on our purpose to protect and beautify the world,” explains Diane Kappas , PPG Vice-President of Global Sustainability.“

Being part of the Penguins Pledge allows us to further our mission and continue to reach fans, customers and community members to educate and engage them on the importance of sustainability.”
