The Global Sustainable Development Summit is a very diverse event. It brings together small business owners, associations, technocrats, sustainability leadership experts, government officials, and members of the academic community to talk about the problems entrepreneurs face today and to find ways to promote sustainable economic growth. Events like this one are especially helpful because they let us use a wide range of evidence and experiences. We are very interested in what you have to say and can't wait to share the results of the council's continued research and outreach to small businesses.
Some of you may have been here last year for a summit on how to use micro, small, and medium-sized businesses to reach sustainable development goals. We want to move that conversation forward today by looking at not only the businesses that are sustainable, but also how these businesses could help create jobs in these tough economic times. We will also talk about the unique problems that women- and minority-owned businesses face. We want to be as specific and useful as we can. The ultimate goal of this summit is to learn more about how to help SMEs and the communities where they are based, to find out what works and what doesn't, and to speed up the development of a sustainable economy.
It's no secret that the last few years have been hard for many small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). They have had to deal with low sales, falling asset values, more uncertainty, and a tight credit market. Many business owners have had to let people go or wait to hire new people. And many people who thought they might start their own businesses have put those ideas on hold. As many of you know, small businesses have helped the economy get back on its feet in the past. In the current economic climate, we need to think carefully about how our council can help small businesses and entrepreneurs get the help they need to create more jobs.
Small businesses also help our country compete globally. They are often more flexible than bigger companies when it comes to bringing new products to the world market. At home, many entrepreneurs do more than provide important goods and services. They and their businesses also help keep the neighbourhoods where they live and work alive. Small business owners often show how much they care about their communities by taking on leadership roles in local schools, volunteering for local nonprofits, and getting involved in civic affairs.
Global Council for the Promotion of International Trade wants to help small businesses and people who want to start their own businesses. We do this by, for example, doing research that adds to what we know about what makes people desire to start their own businesses and what stops them from doing so, and by running outreach programmes that help small business owners and other important people in the community get access to a wide range of financing and technical help.
The issues you will talk about today and tomorrow are important to anyone who cares about the success of small businesses and entrepreneurs around the world, and by extension, the success of our economy as a whole. At today's conference, there will be many different points of view, so I'm sure you won't all agree on the answers to the many questions that will be asked. But the talk itself is very important. We at the Global Council for the Promotion of International Trade have found that summits like this one help us do our outreach and research work more effectively. We hope that each of you will also learn something from this. Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas on how to make economic growth more sustainable. We are excited to see the results of your work.
