Global Running Day

In honor of Global Running Day, I’m featuring some of my running story in this edition of Horner’s Corner. Global Running Day is a REAL thing and is celebrated TODAY! To learn more, check out https://globalrunningday.org/

If you’re new to my network, you may not know I am a runner. What started as a necessity to train for a competitive fitness level for soccer became a hobby, a habit, an obsession, and a way of life for me.

I’ve completed road races of various distances, from full marathons (26.2 miles) to 1-mile fun runs. In celebration of an upcoming milestone birthday, I’m pursuing a 10-year goal to complete a road race in each of the fifty states. Next month, I’ll cross the finish lines in states 42 and 43, in Washington and Oregon, respectively.

Running is no longer as easy for me as it once was. While I still feel capable, I often also feel pain and discomfort.

Why don’t I stop? I suppose part of why I continue to run is that I’ve always done it. Maybe I am fueled by the times I’ve placed in races that have been part of my fifty states goal. Perhaps it’s the promise of a new finish line medal. More likely, running provides me time to decompress, think through puzzles, rehearse presentations, and protect my peace.

If you’re curious about road races, I highly recommend going as a spectator. Runners love to hear people cheering for them as they navigate the course. It’s a rewarding experience to lift their spirits as they place one foot in front of the other in pursuit of the finish line.

And if a group of people is handing out beer to those participating in the road race, stand near them. That’s sure to be an entertaining spot.

Cheers!
