Global renewables giant to propel Queensland’s clean energy future with two new wind farms

  • Publicly-owned energy company Stanwell Corporation signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global renewable energy leader RWE
  • The new partnership has a key focus on the development of two new wind farms in Central and Southern Queensland
  • If successful, it will pave the way for future renewable energy projects, investment and innovation in Queensland
  • The partnership will support the Palaszczuk Government’s renewable energy target of 80% by 2035.

Publicly-owned energy company Stanwell Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global renewable energy leader RWE to establish a strategic partnership and support the delivery of Stanwell’s 9 – 10 GW pipeline of renewable energy assets.

The partnership will commence with the development of two new RWE wind farm projects in Central and Southern Queensland by 2029, and pave the way for future renewable energy projects, investment and innovation.

Partnerships between publicly owned corporations and private companies are key to retaining and growing industry in Queensland, with large energy consumers, including Arnott’s Biscuits and Anglo American, turning to renewable energy to meet their decarbonisation targets.

The Palaszczuk Government has committed to maintaining public ownership of generation and is working with local investors to ensure we can leverage our world-class renewable resources to achieve Queensland’s decarbonisation goals.

The MoU identifies Theodore Wind Farm, a potential new 1,100 MW project near Biloela, and a second wind farm of up to 720 MW in early-stage development in Southern Queensland, with the partnership enabling negotiations on public ownership and equity, as well as offtake models.

Should it proceed, the Theodore project will take advantage of the strong state-owned network infrastructure in the Biloela region, at the heart of one of Queensland’s major Renewable Energy Zones.

The potential developments will help deliver the Palaszczuk Government’s renewable energy target of 80% by 2035 by supporting Stanwell’s commitment to build a renewables portfolio of 9 to 10 GW of generation and 3 to 3.5 GW of storage by 2035.

The proposed Theodore Wind Farm project is expected to generate enough electricity to power about 410,000 homes and will create up to 500 jobs during peak construction and up to 50 ongoing jobs during the project’s 35-year operations.

The two proposed projects being developed under the MOU are expected to be completed by 2029.

Well done. I love progress. Couple of questions though? How long will the turbines last before needed either replacement or just closed down? Where is "whole of life" analysis of both cost and returns of these projects? What is level of subsidy/reward/incentives given to promoters of scheme? Is there a guarantee these turbines will deliver > 50% (or some %) of capacity on an averaged basis? This is important given paltry generation of existing farms (10%)? Have full environment impact assessments been completed. Where can I view them? We are giving rights to a "global" firm, should we? There is a mountain of high quality coal in areas where these windy farms are suggested. Low emission coal power stations can give base load power, independent of weather. What is the comparative costings for this option vs intermittent power from these turbines? If CO2 is the main goal, show a comparison with modular nuclear power (or other nuclear) generation and CO2 production? Does power from these turbines have a smaller CO2 footprint if you include "whole of life"? https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/jamesjhooper_renewable-energy-is-neither-renewable-or-activity-7104960569706770433-d92R?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Great to see that publicly owned corporations and private companies are collaborating and working together to achieve these targets. It's always exciting when technology is used for good causes, in this case green energy and job creation.

We've trusted the corporations for so long. We've listened to their promises of efficiency, productivity, lower costs. Our corporate friends are the one's that have brought us to the brink of existence as we know it. There is another way of understanding nature in all its' complexities; of utilizing nature to provide energy without limit. But who would we trust to handle such a new understanding? How would one describe this new understanding? ... one principle defines nature. Nothing truly collides. All things exist to communicate, and to produce energy, in four new forms, not before observed. Energy is everywhere, in every atomic interaction. Let us walk away from our beloved corporation, that has brought us to where we have arrived today, in complete and utter chaos, as i write this from Texas, in 106 degree weather, without heat index. Let our governments detach themselves; pool monies originating from THE PEOPLE and let us usher in a new age of understanding and abundance and regeneration of soil(s) and restoration of climate, OVERNIGHT.
