Statistics show that in 2023, the global production of direct reduced iron reached 135.51 million tons, an increase of 7.4% compared with the production of 126.16 million tons in 2022.

According to the country or regional distribution, in 2023, India is the world's largest producer of direct reduced iron, with a production of 49.33 million tons, an increase of 16.7%, accounting for 36% of the global total. Iran is the world's second largest producer of direct reduced iron, with output reaching 33.45 million tons, an increase of 1.7%, and the global share reaching 24.7%. India and Iran account for 60.7% of the world's total direct reduced iron production.

In 2023, other countries with large direct reduced iron production are Russia (7.78 million tons, accounting for 5.7% of global production), Egypt (7.22 million tons, accounting for 5.3% of global production), and Saudi Arabia (6.81 million tons, accounting for 5% of global production).

In 2023, the production of direct reduced iron in the United States was 5.24 million tons, down 0.8% year-on-year; Mexico produced 5.16 million tonnes, down 11.6%. Algeria produced 4 million tons, up 3.1% year-on-year; The UAE produced 3.59 million tonnes, up 4.2% year-on-year. Worldsteel expects that by 2030, global direct reduced iron production will increase by 56.2% from the 2019 baseline to 175 million tonnes. Among them, the European Union, the Middle East and North Africa region has the largest increase in direct reduced iron production.
