The Global Poker League comes to China in full force in 2017

December 12, 2016 - Season 1 of the Global Poker League (GPL) - consisting of 12 teams spread out across the Americas and Europe - came to a close just last week with the Montreal Nationals besting the Berlin Bears in the finals to claim the first-ever GPL Championship. Things are only ramping up here though as the GPL today announces the launch of GPL China, set for rollout after the Spring Festival.

An exclusive league built to satisfy the asian nation’s growing appetite for poker, GPL China Season 1 will debut with 8 teams. Each team will represent a diverse city within the country.

“The NBA of Poker”, this organizational offshoot will operate independently of GPL’s central league and is geared specifically to open up poker as an esport and mind sport in China - a team-based Texas Hold’em format that will push the game into the same realm as other mainstream skill based leagues within the region.

Underpinned by the Global Poker Index (GPI), the poker world’s ranking authority with over 500,000 players profiled across 194 countries, GPL China takes inspiration from modern sports, the video game industry and combines them with lessons learned from GPL Season 1.

GPL China’s 8 initial team managers will be announced within the coming 2 months, eventually choosing their team rosters from a mix of GPI ranked pros, online qualifiers & celebrities. While managers and players have yet to be named, the league's 8 introductory teams are already set - take a look below:

- Beijing Great Dragons

- Shanghai Golden Tigers

- Guanghzou Pioneers

- Shenzhen Eagles

- Hangzhou Legends

- Xi'an Warriors

- Chengdu Pandas

- Tianjin Guardians

Once league action begins matches will be played online and live, and will be livestreamed via several media partners throughout China and globally.
