Global phenomenon: Our highest ideals, a lost cause?

  (The research for this article was done in 2016 is it relevant today, June 2018?) 

Many leaders want to believe, albeit, and some attempt to follow Chaplin’s (1940) discourse, "...by the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give [all] men [and women] a chance to work, that will give youth the future and old age security….” However, many of today’s politicians are stepping further away from such ideals, and continue making unrealistic promises! What I have witnessed transpired in the last three decades: Corruption among unscrupulous politicians has become worse now than in the past. Politicians have failed to society, but instead, favor special interest groups or their personal agendas, and this has led to many consequences globally. Slavery was abolished, but today different intellectual slavery has evolved by keeping people enslaved in denying them the opportunity to prosper although their knowledge increased. Their full-time employment became part-time, and their benefits are now less, or completely curtailed. Today,  many citizens live without dignity due to the lack of resources,  opportunities, or a job! Furthermore, more people have “feelings of helplessness and shame!" This is the lowest form of humiliation and suffering. Did corruption create this problem globally? 

Researching forty countries in the past six months (Jan. 4 – July 2, 2016), I randomly interviewed 800+ citizens, ages 23 to 45—university students, business people, teachers, government employees, everyday people—in Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, the Caribbean, the Americas, and the  findings have common denominators. The interviewees’ primary complaints were, “Our corrupt politicians are becoming richer… and we do not have any opportunities…. They are keeping us in poverty….” I  have visited these same countries in the past three decades and each time. I hear more people angry, demanding for “justice and opportunities….”  They are asking for “a job,” so they can “feed [their] families….” Many of these people had a sad, worried, and sometimes with tears falling down their face as they said, “I want my family to live with dignity, can you  help me?” Today, more people are begging on the streets. This is humiliating! Considerable research indicates how instead of politicians creating  more opportunities, jobs, and having justice in their respective countries  for their citizenry: “Corrupt politicians, judges, and corporations have  deceived” citizens and made their countries “shameful” (Bloomberg, 2016; Vogl, 2016, 2015; Green & Mazor, 2015; Powell, 2014; The Washington Post, 2015; Khan, 2014; Platfomlondon, 2013; Prssitiv.com, 2014; Kilzer & Conte, 2012; Gucciardi, 2012; Collier, 2012; Wilcox, 2012; Drury, 2011). 

Parallel to the above comments, why are the international financial institutions that lend funds to politicians globally to create jobs, health programs, and a better standard of living in their countries, do not place stricter policies as to the management of these loans? Most of these funds possibly end-up in politicians’ private bank accounts, or are used to make them more powerful. Despite this, these institutions and other governments’ foreign aid, continue issuing loans or aid to Africa, Latin American and Caribbean countries, where corruption not only impedes sustainable economic development, it leads to social and environmental deterioration, and to more corruption. 

We need changes! The social-committed-politicians, not charlatans and those who care for a new world order must become involved in the process to make the fundamental changes we need today! The world changed, and old paradigms did not. The time has come to hold accountable corrupt politicians, and others, who have abused citizens’ trust! They have deceived us too long, and they have placed societies, and the world, in serious predicaments by their actions! Meanwhile, these politicians are in luxurious resorts and lavishly enjoying life; millions of their constituencies never have a nutritious meal. These politicians have not offered opportunities to their people in their countries for decades, and the time is now to question their actions and demand for justice! 

What contributions are future politicians going to make that will promote prosperity in our societies as a whole, instead of supporting special-interest groups? How much longer are we going to tolerate these hypocrites who use their positions and fallacious arguments to harm human dignity with their actions? If corruption continues by politicians, et al, they will soon cause an irreversible worldwide turmoil! We are experiencing it now with the global refugee crisis, illegal immigration,  economic collapses, a degraded environment, injustices, racism, and terrorism…. We have the technology; we have the knowledge, and we have the resources to become an empowered world. Do politicians,  decision-makers, and we have the will to make our countries economically and socially superior? Are we going to work united, or are we going to continue with the same rhetoric? By the name of dignity, justice, natural and human law, today’s leaders must use their power to face their responsibilities and create a better world order, or future generations will suffer worse consequences than what we are witnessing today! We are divided! 

We need solutions! Who are the protectors of Human Rights and Human Dignity? As for the arrogant corrupt politicians, when are they going to be held accountable for their actions? Where are we heading? Our actions will change lives and the path of humankind!
