Global PAD Association to Launch Groundbreaking Event Series Addressing Disproportionate Amputation Rates in the African American Community

For Immediate Release:

[San Rafael, CA, 2/5/24] - As amputations continue to rise, particularly within the African American community, the Global PAD Association is proud to announce the launch of a four-part event series, PAD: The Lived African American Experience, aimed at addressing and combatting the striking disparities in amputation rates. The first event of this series will commence during Black History Month on February 17th, coinciding with American Heart Month and National Red Sock Day for PAD Awareness.

Amputation Disparities in the African American Community

Amputations within the African American community occur at a staggering 3-4 times higher rate than their white counterparts, underscoring the urgent need to galvanize the community and other stakeholders to engage in candid discussions about the prevalent gaps in communication and care. The Global PAD Association’s event series seeks to provide a platform for diverse stakeholders to collaboratively develop tangible solutions to address these disparities.

Empowering the Community for Change

The primary objectives of the PAD: The Lived African American Experience event series are to raise awareness about the disproportionate amputation rates, facilitate open discussions about underlying factors, and empower the African American community to advocate for improved healthcare communication and access.

Event Format and Organizers

The series will comprise four virtual events throughout 2024, featuring expert panels, keynote speakers, patient testimonials, and open dialogue sessions, allowing for an in-depth exploration of the issues contributing to amputations within the African American community. The event is spearheaded by The Global PAD Association's Diversity Equity amp; Inclusion Patient Committee Chairman, Charles Winters, alongside a team of dedicated community members and healthcare professionals, including Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Zola N’Dandu, Interventional Radiologist Dr. Ian Wilson, and Podiatrist amp; DEI Certified Dr. Stacia Jones.

Engaging Diverse Stakeholders

The events aim to engage a diverse range of stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, community leaders, advocates, and policymakers, with a focus on driving systemic change in healthcare and reducing disparities in amputation rates.

Expected Outcomes and Event Agenda

By the conclusion of the series, the organizers aim to increase awareness, identify actionable steps, and form collaborative partnerships to improve communication, care, and access to treatment for individuals at risk of amputation. The first event on February 17th will feature insightful presentations, high-profile personal experiences, and engaging discussions led by renowned experts in the field.

Series Kick-Off

More than a dozen People of Color will share their views on healthcare based on their experiences and that of their ancestors, communication and physical gaps in care that leads to amputation, and action they believe will help create the change we all want to see in PAD care.
