The recent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem have sparked global outrage. This latest incident is part of a long-standing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians that dates back to the late 19th century when Zionists sought to establish a homeland for the Jewish people in Ottoman-controlled Palestine.
Following World War II and the Holocaust, the United Nations General Assembly passed a plan to partition Palestine into two states, one for Jews and one for Arabs. However, the Arab population already living in Palestine resisted the plan, leading to a war in 1948 between the newly established state of Israel and a coalition of Arab states. Israel emerged victorious and expanded its territory beyond the boundaries set by the UN, leading to the displacement of around 700,000 Palestinians from their homes.
Since then, the Israeli government has continued to occupy Palestinian land, often through the use of force and violence. This has resulted in discrimination, displacement, and violence against Palestinians, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the region. The displacement of Palestinians from their homes, also known as the Nakba, remains a contentious issue and a key factor in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque, located in a hilltop complex that is sacred to both Jews and Muslims, has been a frequent site of violence and conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. The recent violence has caused significant concern, with Israeli security forces resorting to tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades against unarmed worshippers during the sacred month of Ramadan.
The United Nations has condemned the violence and the mass arrests and beating of Palestinians. The situation remains tense as Palestinian militant groups threaten further confrontation. As former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon once said, "The continuing occupation and the lack of a political solution to the conflict fuel a vicious cycle of despair, mutual animosity, and violence. The absence of peace and security negatively affects regional stability and the ability of countries to cooperate on issues of common concern."
