A Global Nomad's Journey
My journey as an Afro-optimist has been a remarkable one, filled with personal growth, professional accomplishments, and a deep-rooted connection to my African heritage. From my early days in the United States to my current endeavors in Africa, I've experienced firsthand the power of embracing one's authenticity and pursuing a vision for a brighter future.
Embracing Your Inner Afro-Optimist
As a Nigeria-born child raised in the United States, I was still surrounded by African culture, thanks to my dad's international students and our family's diverse circle of friends. This upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for multiculturalism and a longing to return to my continent of birth.
My journey back to Africa began with an initial move to Germany, with many years in-between before finally moving to Kenya to drive the Africa growth story for a German multinational. This career move solidified my belief in Africa's potential and ignited my passion for contributing to its development.
While the path to Africa may not always be easy (it took me 37 years!), it's essential to maintain a positive outlook and embrace the concept of Afro-optimism. This mindset celebrates Africa's potential, rejects negative stereotypes, and inspires action.
Afro-optimism isn't just about feeling good; it's about taking action. It's about believing in ourselves, investing in our communities, and supporting African businesses. It's about challenging negative narratives and promoting a more empowering vision for Africa's future.
Focusing on The ONE Thing
In my journey as an Afro-optimist, I've found inspiration in the concept of Gary Keller and Jay Papasan’s "The ONE Thing," which emphasizes the importance of focusing on a single, most important goal to achieve extraordinary results. For me, my ONE Thing is building a new Africa where my sons and future generations can thrive. By identifying your ONE Thing and aligning it with your vision for Africa, you can create a powerful roadmap for your own journey.
However, setbacks are inevitable, but they can also be opportunities for growth and innovation. That's why it's important despite this singular focus on your ONE Thing to have a Plan B. A Plan B is more than just a backup plan; it's a mindset of adaptability and resilience. It's about being able to see opportunities where others see challenges by surrounding yourself with a supportive team, maintaining a positive outlook, seeking help from mentors, and keeping yourself open to new ideas.

Embracing Your Awesomeness
Finally, embracing your authentic self is key to being an Afro-optimist. Your unique background and experiences make you who you are, and celebrating your individuality can inspire others.
Remember, there's only one you. Let's build a movement of confident, empowered individuals who are redefining what it means to be African in the global arena. Together, we can create a future where our voices are heard, our contributions celebrated, and our dreams realized.
And as Afro-optimists, it's important to pay it forward and empower others. This can involve mentorship, investing in African startups, advocating for policies that support entrepreneurship, and fostering a culture of collaboration within the African entrepreneurial community.
Conclusion
By embracing Afro-optimism, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let's continue to inspire each other, support one another, and work together to build a better Africa.
