Global Mobility Trends that will Impact HR in 2024

As we reflect upon what this year will bring us in the global mobility landscape, we forecast a year marked by transition, change, and a need for understanding, resilience, and the ability to adapt. In this month’s newsletter, we dive into 5 key trends: the intensified shortage of skilled workers, increased demands from employees, budget cuts, and the growing influence of AI, all against the backdrop of a politically and economically uncertain world.

1. Intensified Shortage of Skilled Workers

Simply put, there's a shortage of skilled workers in Europe. As businesses grow and innovate, the competition for top talent has reached new levels. HR professionals are finding it hard to attract and retain skilled professionals who can drive success in a fast-changing market. Instead of only focusing on attracting top talent with high formal degrees and specific job skills, it's important to focus on their soft skills, ability to adapt, and motivation to learn. We need to nurture their development and offer opportunities for career- and personal growth to retain valuable employees.

2. Complex Situations Due to Demanding Employees

The times have changed and the expectations of employees are higher than ever before. The demand for work-life balance, personal development, and a sense of purpose at work has increased complexity in HR management, needing to satisfy the demands of the business on one side and the employee on the other. So, how can we keep employees happy and engaged for the long term? HR professionals need to foster open communication channels and implement flexible policies that address the diverse needs of employees, yet motivate them to contribute to the organizational goals linked to their personal growth and development.?

3. Budget Cuts & Cost Pressure

Budget constraints and cost pressures are shaping organizational strategies. HR departments are trying to find innovative solutions to manage resources effectively while ensuring employee satisfaction and productivity. This is where technology and automation come in. Instead of seeing it as a challenge, see opportunities for optimization. Strategic workforce planning, cost-effective technologies, and streamlined processes can help navigate budget constraints without compromising employee well-being.

4. Global Political and Economic Uncertainty

We face a paradox in 2024: A growing demand for labor migration yet a limited capacity to grow our team with an international workforce. The influence of right-wing election winners on migration policies introduces an element of uncertainty. It’s hard to predict what influence this will have on global mobility, but we have to stay adaptable in the face of changing political landscapes. Pro-active scenario planning and a flexible approach to global mobility policies can reduce risks in case of political changes.

5. AI's Impact on Global Mobility

AI is an undeniable force shaping the future of global mobility. The need for flexible and quick solutions in the face of political and economic uncertainty is driving the integration of AI technologies. However, the question arises: Will AI reduce the need for internationally recruited specialists in the long term? While AI undoubtedly improves efficiency and streamlines processes, the human touch remains irreplaceable. Rather than replacing individual skills and expertise, AI should be viewed as a tool to strengthen their capabilities, allowing for more strategic decision-making and personalized experiences.

2024's global mobility trends ask for a holistic, adaptive, and forward-thinking approach from HR professionals. Strategic planning, open communication, and integration of technology will be key to navigating the challenges and shaping a future where global mobility is not just a necessity but a strategic advantage for the interconnectivity and growth of both businesses and their workforce.

And may I add the bad situation for Expats finding proper housing. I know this is an issue in many countries, but in The Netherlands where I am actively helping knowledge workers, due to new governmental legislation the situation has even become worse and rental prices have risen by 8,5% only in the last quarter of 2023. The situation has not been making our job easier, but still having been able to help our customers. Regards, Rupert from Xpatations
