Global Mobility Series - Moving to the US

Yesterday we launched a new Global Mobility Series discussing considerations for HNW clients moving the US. This webinar was the first in a series of discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing HNW clients in relocating to the choice destinations for wealthy individuals around the world.

As the new Biden administration settles into office, there is much for HNW advisors to understand on how clients interested in moving to the US can access a variety of options to allow them to reside there.  In the webinar above, we discussed the immigration options (including Citizenship by Investment programs), tax, legal, wealth structuring and investment management with an expert panel specifically focusing on:

With Anastasia Tonello - Counsel, Ulmer & Berne, New York:

  • What is the current state of play on US immigration with the new Biden administration?
  • What are the entry routes available to HNW clients?
  • Which nationalities are likely to experience the most difficulty with a visa?  What is the situation within embassies for issuing visas?
  • How should those arriving and spending more time in the US manage compliance with their visa requirements?
  • What do you envisage are the likely changes to the immigration system in future?

With Mohammed Asaria - Founder and Board Member, Range Developments, Dubai, UAE:

  • Can you explain how the CIB Program in Grenada & E2 visa fits together for clients wanting to reside in the US?
  • How does the E2 option compare with the EB5 visa?
  • What are the type of hotel developments that clients can invest into under the CIB program of Grenada?
  • How long does the process take?

With Sean Tevel - Partner, Holland & Knight, Miami:

  • What mistakes do people commonly make when they immigrate to the US?
  • Describe the US tax system for someone arriving in the US for the first time?
  • What are the US rules on income tax residency / day count?
  • Is there planning a potential new arrival can implement to minimize their exposure to US taxes?
  • Does a new arrival have to declare and pay tax on worldwide income from day one?

With Todd Cowan - Wealth Manager, LGT Vestra US, London.

  • From an investment management perspective, what are some of the steps to consider pre-arrival in the US?
  • How might clients resident in the UK as UK Res Non Dom consider their investment planning before a move to the US?
  • Once arrived in the US, what are some of the principles of tax efficient investment & portfolio construction for US resident investors?
