GLOBAL MOBILITY AND MILLENNIALS

It is no secret that Global Mobility is an essential part of global business and it has been predicted that the number of globally mobile employees will rise to the highest peak in a decade or so. According to a survey by Mercer, 50% and 29% of millennials ranked the United States and the United Kingdom respectively as the two top destinations they are keen to apply to.?

Millennials have become a substantial part of the global workforce. Their perspectives about work and careers are different from that of their work colleagues in other generations thus international opportunities are more desirable to them. They embrace the notion of relocating as a catalyst for achieving career goals.

Global business talent needs more fluidity across borders and in businesses trying to expand globally. So, investing in young people to do international tasks will bring great success to any organization, especially in a world that is driven by technology.

Why are millennials great employees for global mobility assignments?

  • They are tech-savvy and are comfortable with mobile apps used for digital working and multi-tasking.
  • They are risk-takers. Their virtual world has no boundaries, and for them neither does the real world.?
  • They adjust quickly to the changing world compared to their colleagues in older age groups.
  • They value career growth. For millennials, global assignments are career advancement opportunities that are rarely motivated by money. They want to learn and explore the world to see what it offers.

This is how we can support millennials in the global workforce.?

As part of the context, it is important to understand how millennials work with their peers and to recognize when employees might be suffering from multigenerational culture shock. Implementing mobility policies that cater for millennials could be a great start as they are progressively set to make up the bulk of the workforce all around the world.

A study by Moovas established that 64% of employers feel that mobility policies do need to be changed to meet Millennials' needs and aspirations, but only 16% were planning to or have introduced such changes. This is a huge problem as new trends are emerging between generations. Companies must strike a balance between business requirements and the expectations of the different generations in the mobile workforce. One of the vital key points to support millennials in a global workforce is to appeal to their interest in gaining international experiences. Their desire is in learning new skills, meeting new people and having experiences that further their professional development.?

Mobility opportunities are often sought out and met with great enthusiasm by this generation. Mobility is often viewed as a pathway to professional advancement. According to many research pieces, it is estimated that more than 80% of millennials are willing to relocate as long as they think the position is worth the move. Another study by CrownWorldMobility found that 71% want, and expect an overseas assignment during their career.

In conclusion, while millennials may be eager for new experiences that can be gained by relocating, many are also looking for flexibility in the program. To facilitate a smooth transition for your employees when mobilizing your workforce around the world partner with StrategicandAgile today.
