Global Experts Convene at IRC-3 to Advance River Conservation and Climate Resilience

The 3rd International River Congress (IRC-3), jointly hosted by the South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD), the National Centre for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, and the University of Kelaniya, launched on November 8, 2024, with resounding success.

This global congress brought together an exceptional assembly of environmental experts, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders from India, Sri Lanka, Greece, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Finland, South Africa, Nepal, and the USA, fostering cross-border dialogue and collaboration. The active participation of the Indian High Commission of Sri Lanka highlighted the importance of transboundary cooperation in tackling river-related challenges and climate resilience.

The opening ceremony set the stage with a powerful welcome address by the Congress’s Patron, emphasizing the critical need for collective action in river conservation. This was followed by an address from Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, who stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding river ecosystems. Dr. Pandey later met with the Indian delegation, exploring opportunities for strengthened cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, facilitated by SAIARD, in sustainable water resource management.
