In comparison, wind installations grew by 2.3% during the same period with 1.92 GW.?The utility scale PV segment drove the installations with about 9.6 GW, 2.3 times higher than the previous year, comprising 7.5 GW in Q1 2024 with 5.3 GW installed in March alone. The state of Rajasthan led the new additions with 3.2 GW, followed by 2.9 GW in Gujarat, and 1 GW in Tamil Nadu. For the complete story, click here.
US raises Section 201 tariff rate quota for imported solar cells: US President Joe Biden has increased the tariff rate quota (TRQ) for imported solar cells under Section 201 from 5 GW annually to 12.5 GW. This means US manufacturers will be able to import a higher volume of solar cells annually, with effect from August 1, 2024. The President’s proclamation raises the annual volume of crystalline silicon PV (CSPV) cells to be imported, providing a respite to module manufacturers. The latter are almost entirely dependent on imported solar cells for their module production since the US does not yet have its own local supply of solar cells. For the complete story, click here.
Argentina scheme to back solar uptake: Argentina’s Secretaría de Energía de la República or the Energy Secretariat has launched a new program to improve energy efficiency in homes and commercial and industrial (C&I) segments. Under this, it will provide loans for the installation of energy efficient technology including solar PV panels and solar water heaters. The Programa de Reconversión y Eficiencia Energética or the Energy Conversion and Efficiency Program has been introduced in collaboration with the Banco de la Nación Argentina (BNA). It entails preferential rates and financing up to 24 interest-free installments for the purchase of selected products at Tienda BNA.????
Australia’s major project status to accelerate 32 GW RE capacity installation: The Federal Government of Australia has awarded major project status to the renewable energy powered green ammonia projects backed by the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and multinational oil and gas giant from Britain, bp plc. This status from the government’s Major Projects Facilitation Agency (MPFA) makes these projects of national significance and contribute to economic growth and employment. Planned for the Murchison area of Western Australia’s Mid West region, the Murchison Green Hydrogen Project of the CIP will have an annual generation capacity of up to 6 GW of green energy from onshore wind and solar PV. This will be used to produce around 2 million tons of green ammonia/year. For the complete story, click here.
India to establish 1 model solar village in every single district: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has issued operational guidelines for the implementation of a Model Solar Village in each district of the country. This component is part of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for which the administration has announced INR 750 billion financial outlay (see India Eyeing 30 GW Rooftop Solar Capacity With New Scheme). Literally translated, the Prime Minister’s Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme, the initiative has allocated INR 8 billion ($95.28 million) of the total budget to this Model Solar Village component. It comes with a provision of central financial assistance (CFA) grant of INR 10 million ($0.12 million)/model village. For the complete story, click here.
