THE GLOBAL LITHIUM RACE

THE GLOBAL LITHIUM RACE

The management of lithium at a global level is expanding rapidly, and the production of this valuable resource is gaining traction. Currently, lithium demand is projected to grow by 20% annually, driven by the surge in electric vehicles and technological devices. In this context, Dr. Sergio A. Bustos, Ambassador of the International Lithium Chamber, has presented an ambitious plan at the Miami Dade – Beacon Council. His objective is to attract American investors for lithium extraction in Argentina and Chile. This lithium, in turn, will be directed to technology companies in the United States or to U.S. factories located in Latin America, with the aim of producing lithium batteries under strict environmental standards, aspiring to become a sort of "B Corp."

This is a matter of state in the race for lithium dominance in the world. Currently, China controls approximately 65% of the lithium market, while the United States represents about 10%. Beyond the numbers, which indicate a potential market valued at over $5 billion by 2025, this initiative represents a fundamental opportunity for job creation in the technology sector, always respecting environmental imperatives.

In terms of harsher figures, in the current electromobility landscape, China has an apparent share of 76.4%, while the United States has only 0.9%, according to the database compiled by OBELA with E-Bus, Radar, PWC, AIE, Statista, and Catalstart.

"We are fully prepared to offer the legal and economic security that American investors need. Our commitment is that the relationship will not be limited solely to lithium extraction but will also have a significant objective for the utilization of this precious mineral," asserts Dr. Bustos, an expert in mining and international law, originally from Argentina.

It is noteworthy that the highest concentration of the mineral is in the “Lithium Triangle,” as reported by BBC News in an article stating, “More than half of the world’s lithium is in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, a triangle that has sparked the interest of governments and investors looking to enter those markets.”
