G7 leaders are nearing a deal to help fight fires in the Amazon, according to French President Emmanuel Macron. Leaders from France, the U.S., Japan, Germany, Italy, the U.K. and Canada are finalizing “concrete commitments involving technical resources and funding,” per Macron, as part of their meeting in Biarritz. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called up the military to combat the fires, deploying roughly 44,000 troops and military aircraft on Saturday. Fires have hit at least six Brazilian states. Brazil's National Space Research Institute, which monitors deforestation, has recorded 76,720 wildfires across the country this year — up 85% since just last year. ? Here’s what people are saying.

Dozens were arrested over the weekend as violent clashes between protesters and police resumed in Hong Kong. The activity “brought an end to nearly two weeks of restraint,” per The New York Times, and saw Hong Kong’s police use water cannons for the first time since June. The violence — on the heels of large, peaceful demonstrations — highlights possible discord among protest leaders over whether peace or rioting is a more effective strategy. The protests initially stemmed from a bill that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China. ? Here’s what people are saying.

Disney hits Target: Disney stores will soon be located in select Target locations across the U.S. The companies announced that 25 stores will open on Oct. 4, with an additional 40 sites by 2020. The “shops-in-shop” will feature more than 450 Disney items (such as toys, games and accessories), including 100 products previously available exclusively at Disney retail locations. The move will help Disney, which currently has 300 stores globally, reach customers as malls continue to struggle with falling foot traffic. ? Here’s what people are saying.

UBS and Deutsche Bank were in merger talks to combine investment-banking operations as recently as June, reveals The Wall Street Journal. A deal between the two lenders couldn’t be reached because the two parties reportedly failed to agree on issues such as structure and allocated capital, but shows “how far European lenders are willing to go to address a punishing banking environment.” Talks to join Deutsche and Commerzbank collapsed in April. ? 5G? No thanks, say cities. 5G is often considered the future of telecommunications, with the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission even calling it integral to "winning the race with China." But despite the FCC setting rules for its rollout, 5G has become a hot-button issue in some cities across America where leaders don’t want to be told how and when to install the technology. Health concerns are also a factor, although the World Health Organization equated potential harm from the 5G's radio-frequency emissions with other “possibly carcinogenic” substances, including coffee and pickles. ? Idea of the Day: Leadership is something to be practiced, says Amazon’s Andreas von der Heydt. It doesn’t just happen overnight.

“It takes constant effort and time to develop the skills, experience, and trust to become a leader and be seen as such by others.”
