Corp, SERST sign MoU on road safety

To conduct a comprehensive study on road safety in the city, the Centre for Heritage Environment and Development (C-Head) in Kochi, under the city corporation, and the SCMS Institute for Road Safety and Transportation (SERST) have signed an MoU. This partnership will focus on road safety and traffic modernization. The initiative includes special campaigns and awareness classes, particularly targeting educational institutions and public places. Additionally, safety audits of city junctions and roads will be a key feature of the program.


T.N. State Transport and Road Safety Commissionerate collects ?1.09 crore penalty from violators

On Monday, May 27, 2024, the Tamil Nadu State Transport and Road Safety Commissionerate conducted a special inspection drive across the state, penalizing the owners of over 1,050 vehicles for various Motor Vehicles Act violations. A senior official stated that following numerous complaints, Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials and Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) inspected 5,463 vehicles, discovering 1,054 in violation of the rules. The drive resulted in fines totaling ?1.09 crore.


Decrease in road accident fatalities in Delhi till May 15, shows data

The Delhi Police data indicates a slight decrease in road accident fatalities in the first five months of this year. Up until May 15, 518 people lost their lives in 511 accidents, compared to 552 deaths in 544 crashes during the same period last year. The Delhi Traffic Police attributes this improvement to enhanced law enforcement and increased community engagement and collaboration to promote road safety.


323 vulnerable road corridors in Kerala: District-level rectification begins

Efforts to enhance road safety in the state have begun with work underway to rectify 323 vulnerable road corridors at the district level. Each district-level expert committee has been allocated Rs. 10 lakh to address these safety concerns, as part of the initial phase of the Road Safety Authority's action plan. Authorities have identified 'vulnerable' areas with the highest concentration of black spots within stretches of 5 to 10 kilometers. Of these, 149 are on national highways and 174 are on state highways, among the 4,592 black spots identified across the state.


Over 10 lakh motor accident claims worth ?80,455 crore pending nationwide, reveals RTI

According to information obtained through the RTI Act, a total of 10,46,163 motor accident claims worth ?80,455 crore are pending across the country. The number of pending claims has consistently increased between 2018-19 and 2022-23. This data was provided by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in response to a query filed by Supreme Court advocate K. C. Jain in April.


Global transport ministers call for new road safety assessment framework for business

At the International Transport Forum in Leipzig, Germany, on May 23, 2024, Transport Ministers from over 60 countries called for a new assessment framework to enhance road safety practices within corporate value chains. The Chairman's declaration from a Ministerial meeting of the 69 member states of the International Transport Forum (ITF)—an intergovernmental organization for transport—urges the private sector to implement the safe system principles of road safety throughout their value chains, as outlined in the Global Plan for the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
