Road accident deaths see 4% rise in Odisha in 2023: Police

According to recent data released by the state police, road accident-related fatalities in Odisha saw a 4% increase in 2023 compared to the previous year. In 2021 and 2022, the fatality growth rates were recorded at 7.2% and 7.6% respectively. With 5,467 deaths in 2022, the toll rose by 229 in 2023, reaching a total of 5,696 fatalities.



Bengaluru witnessed 174 fatalities in accidents in the first two months of 2024

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.N. Anucheth reported that Bengaluru recorded 174 fatalities in accidents during the first two months of 2024, compared to 914 fatalities in 2023. While speaking at a road safety campaign organized by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) on March 12, Anucheth outlined the efforts undertaken by the Bengaluru police to improve traffic management, minimize accidents, and strengthen road safety citywide.

The road safety audit revealed a lack of protocol for addressing and monitoring black spots, significant issues with the shape, size, and color of existing signage, and the finding that only 25% of footpath surfaces were in usable condition. In response to these findings, the PWD has instructed all chief engineers to undertake specific tasks aimed at addressing and rectifying the hazards compromising mobility.



Tourists to Goa now need to sign a police form before renting a vehicle

In response to recent fatalities involving rented vehicles in Goa, tourists seeking to rent vehicles will now be required to sign a police-mandated undertaking pledging compliance with road safety and traffic norms. The decision aims to foster heightened awareness of road safety regulations among users of rental services. Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Rahul Gupta explained that the objective is to create ‘a psychological impact on users’. By signing the undertaking, the users will be more cognizant of this issue, hopefully resulting in a reduction in accidents.



In Mohali, road mishaps snuff out six lives each week

In Mohali, road fatalities in 2023 rose to 320, surpassing 2022's 296 deaths by 8%, according to police data. Two-wheeler riders accounted for 172 casualties, with pedestrians at 102, totaling 85% of fatalities. Experts attribute the high number of fatal accidents to increased vehicular traffic without adequate infrastructure development, poor road conditions, and the lack of essential road features like roundabouts, speed tables, traffic lights, and pedestrian crossings.



WHO publishes landmark framework to improve road safety in Eastern Mediterranean Region

The "Strategic Action Framework for Enhancing Road Safety Systems in the Eastern Mediterranean Region" has recently been released by WHO (World Health Organization). This document offers direction on crafting and executing tailored, cross-sectoral national road safety policies and action plans using the Safe System methodology. It aids in facilitating country-level efforts to enact the "Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030".

Training of trainers on road safety for journalism begins

The Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio & Communication (BNNRC), with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), conducted a two-day training program for trainers on road safety in Bangladesh. The objective of the training was to empower 21 journalists with the essential knowledge and capabilities to cover road safety issues proficiently.
