Have you ever pondered why, in our interconnected world where products traverse continents in mere months, we often fail to adopt solutions that have been available for over two decades? This perplexing trend in global innovation strikes a chord with my experience in international business and technology.
In my travels for work, I've observed a striking similarity in the challenges faced by nations, be it traffic, pollution, or healthcare. Each country devises its solutions, some ideal, others less effective. Yet, we struggle to look beyond our borders, to emulate or seek help from others. Sometimes it's as simple as adopting a technology or methodology, or forging international collaborations. We're fixated on reinventing the wheel, ignoring existing solutions in the market. This phenomenon isn't limited to one level; it's pervasive, affecting methodologies, products, materials, and practical solutions.
Consider roundabouts: studies show they reduce accidents, yet some countries resist their adoption. Isn't it more crucial to educate drivers than to risk lives? Similarly, in Europe, houses have been built with high energy efficiency for perhaps 40 years. In contrast, the U.S. is only slowly adopting similar practices, including solar panels, which are commonplace in my hometown in Italy, surrounded by mountains and known for its cold winters. Yet, in sunny California, their adoption is surprisingly sluggish.
This brings me to a crucial point: are we overlooking existing solutions? I recall a colleague, deeply involved in technology innovation discussions with U.S. corporates and governments, who always asked, "Have you looked at how others across the ocean are solving this problem?" Sadly, the answer was often no. Despite politicians and corporate executives frequently traveling abroad, there's a reluctance to observe and learn from global solutions.

The startup world isn't immune to this either. Many founders approach me with ideas they believe are groundbreaking, yet they often lack comprehensive market analysis, particularly in terms of international solutions. This issue was especially prevalent in Italy, where market research was limited to Italian sources, overlooking global innovations that already addressed the same needs.
"We fall so deeply in love with our solutions or become so entangled in our problems that we fail to see they've already been solved," I often reflect. In this era, we are surrounded by solutions to age-old problems, yet we are hindered by mental barriers that have probably existed for millennia. It's time for a change in perspective.?
Let's begin to recognize the wealth of solutions available to us and overcome the mental barriers that prevent their adoption. The key to progress lies in our ability to embrace these global solutions, to look beyond our immediate surroundings and learn from the vast reservoir of innovation that our interconnected world offers.
