The Global Hunger Index report on India in a nutshell

Here are the key takeaways from the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI).

  • India ranks 111th out of 125 countries in the Global Hunger Index 2023, indicating a serious hunger level.
  • India's GHI score is 28.7, categorized as "serious" but slightly improved.
  • The report also indicates that neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka outperformed India.

What is the Global Hunger Index (GHI)?

It is an annual report by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.

The report measures hunger on a 100-point scale, with 0 being no hunger & 100 being the worst.

It comprises of four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and child mortality.

Parameters in India as per GHI

Some of the factors Responsible for Hunger in India:

  • Hidden hunger / Undernutrition & micronutrient deficiency.
  • Socioeconomic disparities and poverty.
  • Inefficient food distribution & agricultural practices.
  • Gender inequality in food access.
  • Climate change and environmental stressors.

Hunger and child mortality have multiple complex causes.

The GOI has criticized the GHI methodology, citing discrepancies in child-wasting data and pointed out that three out of four GHI indicators focus on child health, which only represents some of the population. They have also criticized the accuracy of the "Proportion of Undernourished Population" indicator.
