The Global Hack: 40+ superheroes, 12 000 hackers, Erykah Badu, Guns n' Roses, and the beautiful chaos of love.
I've been sleeping for two days now. Time to say some thanks and go back to sleep.
A month ago an ad-hoc team of volunteers from Accelerate Estonia, Garage 48, and Guaana, dropped everything and dedicated ourselves to a cause that empowered people around the world to build solutions that save lives, livelihoods, and connect communities in this time of crisis. From 50+ regional #hackthecrisis events with more than 100 000 participants, we escalated to #theglobalhack.
Partnerships with the United Nations, European Commission, New America, European Space Agency, ADC*Europe, and many more.
World-leading experts Bill Tai, Carmen Kass, Ian Rogers, Reid Hoffman, Christopher M. Schroeder, Khaliya, Mona Hamdy, Sam Altman, Samantha Cristoforetti, Garry Kasparov, Sophia Bush, Sebastian Thrun, Thomas Ermacora, Konstatinos Papmiltiadis, Ralph Echemendia and many, many more.
Support from our president Kersti Kaljulaid. Growth from around 6 people to 40+ volunteers and 100+ global team.
1032 ideas proposed. 507 teams built. Over 12 000+ participants from 100+ countries. 220 000 eur prize money. Here are the results: https://theglobalhack.com/results/
None of this existed 3 weeks ago. Guns N’Roses Matt Sorum called this “the greatest rock and roll band ever created”. It was pretty wild.
Time to personally thank some people. This is a long one, yet just the people I worked with directly, so I'm sorry if I missed someone crucial. I'm positive that if Kai Isand, Calum Cameron, Elis Tootsman, Anniken Haldna, Maarja Pehk, and Priit Salumaa add their lists, it would be 10x longer. But here goes.
* Deeply thankful for the 40+ people who put their everything in this. All of us made sacrifices during this time. Our sleep, work, income, family time. You are golden.
* Deeply thankful to people who joined when help was needed. Sandra Raju, Liisa Ennuste, Helery Pops, Marge Maidla, Keili Sükijainen, Chris Rhyss Edwards, Allan Martinson, Arnaud Castaignet, Heidi Kakko, Adam Rang, Karen K Burns. Thank you for your trust.
* Deeply thankful to Victoria T??ker for making my job easy. Thanks for catching everything before things fell, and guiding my attention when it needed guidance. You are my team forever.
* Deeply thankful for United Nations joining us after meeting with Marina Ponti and her SDG action team. My love to JD for the introductions. United Nations can move as fast as a startup when incentives are right.
* Deeply thankful for camp Guaana super fast re-structuring and solid management throughout the hacks. Edgar Aronov, Martin Henk, Owais Afaq, Rikard Relander. My love to you all.
* Deeply thankful for Art Directors Club of Europe joining us. Ami Hasan, Janno Siimar - my gratitude.
* Deeply thankful for Slack and Zoom working with us. Bill Tai, Tomicah, Adam Dexter - thank you for being there to build bridges, when they were needed.
* Deeply thankful for New America stepping in, with Tomicah Tillemann and Anne-Marie Slaughter leading the way.
* Deeply thankful for IDEO joining us. Mitch Sinclair, Paul Bennett, thank you.
* Deeply thankful for ESA joining us. Thank you for your constant support Angeliki Kapoglou.
* Deeply thankful for Facebook showing up and throwing their might behind us, and taking no credit for it. Konstantinos Papamiltiadis - my hat off. Loved our interview.
* Deeply thankful for Christopher M. Schroeder, Thomas Ermacora, Nicole Patrice DeMember and Mona Hamdy trusting me with access to their communities. You are the best humanity has to offer. Selfless.
* Deeply thankful to Helen Walters for reaching out inviting to do a TED interview.
* Deeply thankful for Ray Dalio believing in us and mentioning us 4 times during his TED interview that was back to back with mine.
* Deeply thankful for Elis Tootsman never dropping the ball, whatever I threw at her. She is hands down the best head of PR I have ever met in my life. World-class. From one minute in CNN to Financial Times, Forbes, and Voice of America. She delivered relentlessly. None of the bullshit “I’m here to lead, give me a team” attitude I've heard so many times. She kicked stuff off on her own, grew a team from zero, made it work. True leader.
* Deeply thankful for Norway's team and Cisco taking on all the challenges with live performances I threw at them. Bj?rn Andreas Sponheim Wentzel, J?rn Hauk?y. You are amazing.
* Deeply thankful to Imogen Heap for show up with her friend Tim Exile and co-creating music with the hackers online. So much love.
* Deeply thankful for Guns n’ Roses Matt Sorum and his wife Ace Harper showing up to support the hackers in a heartbeat when Mona and I called. Really enjoyed our talk. They have dedicated themselves for helping ones less fortunate.
* Deeply thankful for Erykah Badu picking up the phone at 3 am when I reached out and deciding on the spot to put her power behind us. You found your tribe. You made me cry during an interview. I have rarely seen such strength.
I’m proud that we collectively wrote a new chapter to the Estonian digital success stories. This time with our global friends. thanks for calling and including me 4 weeks ago Mikk Vainik. I'll be even more hesitant to pick up now when you call. ??
14 days ago I wrote the following. I stand by this with proof now
We hack for love. We hack for the people we don't know and will never meet. We hack for the future where you don't have to be afraid to hug another person. We are not European, American, African, or Asian. We are human. And we will hack, because we, humans, love.
I’ll leave this moment for you to enjoy. Erykah opening her soul for the world to see.
Thank you.
