A global groundswell of public action for a Fossil Fuel Treaty

Bonjour à toutes et à tous!

This month, a wave of global activism has taken the world by storm as citizens rally behind the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. From vibrant and pacifist protests in major city centres to viral online campaigns, the public's call for a fossil-free future is booming. This movement is breaking barriers, uniting people from all walks of life with a shared vision: a sustainable planet free from fossil fuels.?

Though we are not responsible for organising recent protests, the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative stands in full support of citizens' rights to peaceful demonstration - including groups who have scaled actions across Europe and North America at airports urging leaders to phase out coal, oil and gas. The message is loud and clear: these nations must step up and endorse the proposed Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, leading the charge towards a cleaner and fair future.

In anticipation of the Summit of the Future in New York, Global Citizen is launching a petition for world leaders to endorse a Fossil Fuel Free Future in the “Pact for the Future”. In the UK, a powerful petition is making waves, calling on the Prime Minister to endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty. While the new government has pledged to ban new gas, oil, and coal projects, citizens say that it's just a starting point and demand more. They call their prime minister to support the treaty to bring a fast and fair end to the era of coal, oil and gas.?

This groundswell of public action reflects a rising global consciousness about the climate crisis. People are not just requesting change—they are taking action to make it happen,, with a sense of urgency and unity that resonates worldwide.

CITIZENS AROUND THE WORLD CALL ON GOVERNMENTS TO ENDORSE THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY PROPOSAL: ADD YOUR VOICE

Amidst record-breaking temperatures, airports across Europe and North America witnessed peaceful disruptions as activists called on governments to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Treaty. From blocked security gates in Helsinki to halted air traffic in Montreal and Cologne, citizens demanded action as part of an international uprising to end fossil fuels. While the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative was not involved in organising these actions, we stand in solidarity with the right to peaceful protest and calls on governments to take swift action to phase out fossil fuels.

STAND WITH THE KAVANGO COMMUNITIES AGAINST HARMFUL DRILLING

ReconAfrica's drilling in Namibia’s Kavango region threatens the biodiversity of the Okavango Delta and the well-being of local communities. This project risks catastrophic climate impacts and disrupts local communities already facing severe climate change challenges. Stand with the Kavango communities against fossil fuel exploitation by demanding a just transition to sustainable energy. Sign the petition to urge the Namibian Ministry of Environment to stop this drilling.

HURRICANE BERYL’S INTENSITY SHOWS THE URGENT NEED FOR GLOBAL ACTION?

Hurricane Beryl's devastation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines exposes the failure of global climate action. The Category 4 storm left 90% of houses on Union Island damaged or destroyed, highlighting the urgent need for meaningful global action against climate change. Ruleta Camacho Thomas, Ambassador for Environmental Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda, says, “It is not enough to offer post-disaster aid; we must tackle the root cause of these increasingly destructive storms. It is high time for a binding international treaty to regulate fossil fuels and protect our island communities.”

CALLING ON UK LEADERS TO SUPPORT THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY

We're calling on the UK's new Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, and Secretary for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, to endorse the Fossil Fuel Treaty before COP29. This transformative plan, championed by climate-vulnerable countries, needs wealthy nations like the UK on board to commit to a binding international agreement with three crucial pillars: ending fossil fuel expansion, phasing out existing production, and ensuring a just transition to clean energy.?

Sign the petition urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer to support the Fossil Fuel Treaty .
