CAC adopted a number of food safety and quality standards
On 27 November 2024, the 47th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) considered and adopted a number of food safety standards:

- Revision to the?Standard for Named Vegetable Oils?(CXS 210-1999): inclusion of Avocado Oil
- Guidelines for Food Hygiene Control Measures in Traditional Markets for Food
- Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Ciguatera Poisoning
- Additions, revisions, and amendments to the?General Standard for Food Additives?(GFSA) (CXS 192-1995)
- Revisions to the?Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling?(CXG 2-1985),?Annex I
- Amendment of the?Standard for Canned Sardines and Sardine-Type Products?(CXS 94-1981)
- Guidelines on the Provision of Food Information for Pre-Packaged Foods Offered via E-Commerce
- Guidelines on the Use of Technology to Provide Food Information in Food Labelling
- Revision to the?General Standard for the Labelling of Pre-packaged Foods?(CXS 1-1985): provisions relevant to allergen labelling

Thailand proposed to revise regulations on packaging and labeling of alcoholic beverages
On November 28, 2024, Thailand's Ministry of Health issued a proposal to revise the regulations governing the packaging and labeling of alcoholic beverages, with a feedback period ending on December 28, 2024 for comments.?

Mongolia established two dairy standards
On 22 November 2024, the Mongolian Bureau of Technical Standards (BTS) established two dairy standards, namely the?Standard for Fermented Milk?(MNS 4229:2024) and the?Standard for Drinking Milk?(MNS 0219:2024), with a feedback period ending on 30 December 2024.

Malaysia to amend food law
On 9 December 2024, the Ministry of Health of Malaysia released the?Draft Amendments to the Food Act 1983?(Bill 281) for public consultation from 9 December 2024 to 8 January 2025.

Indonesia to implement new food labeling requirements
On November 27, 2024, the Indonesian Medicines and Food Control Agency (BPOM) required the mandatory introduction of a "nutrition value" system for the sugar, salt and fat (SSF) content in relevant food products, and specified the maximum level value of sugar, salt and fat content.

Ukraine approved olive oil standard regulations
On 22 November 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine issued an order approving the olive oil standards regulation, as well as the rules for inspection of olive oil marketing standards and methods of product characterisation.

Japan to revise two food management regulations on tablets and capsules
On November 21, 2024, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan?(MHLW)?issued Proposal No. 235110008, proposing to revise two food management regulations for tablets, capsules, etc., in order to improve the regulatory measures for similar products after the damage incident of KOBAYASHI PHARMACEUTICAL's health care products containing monascus ingredients.?

Saudi Arabia proposed to develop standards for canned mixed fruits
On December 3, 2024, the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia issued a proposal to develop a standard for canned mixed fruits with a comment period ending January 3, 2025.

New Zealand amended wine export requirements

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India?(FSSAI)?has recently rejected imports of food products, including apples, nuts, alcoholic beverages and nori, from China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Bangladesh for failing to meet food safety and quality standards.

U.S. FDA updates and streamlines qualified imported food entry process
From SeafoodMedia, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced plans to update and extend the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program (VQIP), which is designed to speed up the process of clearing food imports for participants who adhere to strict safety standards throughout the supply chain.

Philippines plans to import 25,000 tons of seafood to curb inflation
From SeafoodMedia, Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has allowed the importation of 25,000 tons of frozen fish and other types of seafood, saying it is necessary to curb inflation.

China NHC issued announcement on 11 Three New Foods including Camellia?petelotii cultures
On December 13, 2024, the National Health Commission issued the Announcement No. 6 of 2024 on 11 "Three New Foods" including Camellia?petelotii cultures. The original text is as follows:

In accordance with the provisions of the?Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, the reviewing authority organized experts to review the safety assessment materials for the application of Camellia?petelotii culture as a new food ingredient, the application of eight substances, including glucoamylase, as a new food additive, and the application of two substances, including 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) benzene, as a new food-related product and passed.

EU proposed to authorize Extracted oil derived from Nannochloropsis oculata as a novel food
On December 4, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued Public Consultation Paper No. PC-1228 proposing to authorize extracted oil derived from Nannochloropsis oculata as a novel food.

Health Canada added 1 gene-edited potato to the list of non-novel plant products for food use
On October 28, 2024, Health Canada announced that it has added one gene-edited potato to the list of non-novel plant products for food use. The gene-edited potato was developed by the J.R. Simplot Company in the United States and was genetically edited to reduce polyphenol oxidase levels in the tubers, thereby delaying browning. Since the gene-edited potato was determined to be a non-novel plant product, it does not require pre-market safety assessment and is expected to be available as early as 2025.
