A global focus on road safety

Here at Brigade, the central core of our business has always been saving lives through preventing collisions and much of this involves focusing on global road safety. Each country has its particular challenges and objectives, and gaining a closer understanding of these issues and how they are being addressed is critical to what we do and the products we sell.

There is no doubt that road safety has improved enormously over the last decade. This is endorsed by the fact that in 2020 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution for improving global road safety, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. This resolution has the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.

With effect from July 2024, all vehicles registered within the jurisdiction of the European Union will have to comply with the General Safety Regulation (GSR).

The GSR is part of the EU’s road safety strategy, which aims to achieve a goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on European roads by 2050.

As a company that has been at the forefront of vehicle safety improvement since 1976, Brigade is well-placed to help fleet owners and managers ensure timely GSR compliance.

We have been closely involved in supporting the fleets to comply with the Direct Vision Standard (DVS), enforced by Transport for London. Over the past six years, the team at Brigade UK has been working hard to support customers with the regulation, which applies to all vehicles weighing over 12 tonnes operating in the Greater London area.

Most recently, our UK team was involved in the consultation for the updates to the Progressive Safe System (PSS) which forms the rules around the types of safety devices that need to be fitted to vehicles to ensure they comply with the DVS. This includes the development and introduction of Brigade’s latest products, Radar Predict, and our Moving Off Information System (MOIS), Front Radar. Both systems have been specifically designed to meet the relevant criteria for the PSS as well as undergone independent testing to ensure they are of the highest quality and operating standards.

Meanwhile, Vision Zero – a multi-national road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a roadway system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving traffic – is also being implemented across the US. Cities, including New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago have all adopted the strategy to serve as models for other communities and leverage their shared resources and highly visible national profiles to showcase their commitment to transforming road safety practices.

We’re delighted that our award-winning products have already contributed greatly to reducing collisions and fatalities, not only in the UK but across the world. From the introduction of the first vehicle reversing alarm to Europe in 1976 to the comprehensive range of vehicle safety systems we provide globally today, we’ve been instrumental in keeping road safety on the agenda.

As Brigade strives to ensure drivers and vulnerable road users across the globe are protected by the most up-to-date and effective technology available, keeping abreast of the specific problems in every area is vital.
