UN Urges Travel Sector to Sign Climate Action Commitment at COP26. What is this commitment about, and how could it change the travel market?

In my opinion, no matter where you were born, where you work, and what your hobbies are, climate change is what you should be concerned about. It should worry everyone who lives on Earth at the moment.

If not UN members, who must understand the challenges beyond global warming caused by global consumption and the tourism industry? From October 31 to November 12, 2021, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) is being hosted by the Scottish city of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. There, the world leaders will be brought together to fight climate change.

COP is the world's most prominent summit on the world's most significant issues. This year's summit was called 'the most important' long before it started. I highly recommend watching this video if you want to learn more about the summit and its effectiveness.?

One of the main topics of this summit is working to coordinate and accelerate the climate action efforts of the travel industry's major players. As a result, the global travel and tourism sector leaders - everyone from airlines to tour operators - will be asked to sign and commit to the 'Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism' when it officially launches next week at the COP26 summit.

This Declaration would help the UN cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by the year 2030 and achieve 'Net Zero' before 2050.?

For you to understand why it is essential, I will list some of the recent statistics data: in 2020, atmospheric C02 concentration reached 149 percent of pre-industrial levels. It happened even though the tourism industry was not in its most effective stage because of COVID-19. I am not trying to say the pandemic is a good thing, but imagine what would have happened to global emissions if there was no COVID-19.

When talking about statistics from 2016, the greenhouse gases produced by the tourism sector alone increased by at least 60 percent between 2005 and 2016, and the industry was found to have generated five percent of all global emissions in 2016. I am sure the members are higher now.

So what are the main points from Glasgow Declaration??

  1. Measure – Measure and report all tourism-related emissions with transparency using UNFCCC-approved tools and methodologies.
  2. Decarbonize – Set and deliver targets to accelerate decarbonization in all areas of operation, with carbon offsetting playing only a subsidiary role.
  3. Regenerate – Restore and protect ecosystems, and safeguard biodiversity, food security, and water supply.
  4. Collaborate – Share risks and solutions to ensure that collective plans are as effective and coordinated as possible.
  5. Finance – Ensure organizational resources and capacity are sufficient to meet the shared climate plan objectives.

Those who sign the plan must create a plan to follow within 12 months and start implementing changes. The interesting thing is that Google is now a partner of the COP26 family.?

Therefore, the changes in the travel industry will be massive.

What is your opinion on the effectiveness of COP26? Do you think some real action will come soon? Share your feedback in the comments! If you have any questions, I will gladly answer them in private messages or by email at [email protected].
