?? Global E-Waste Day: 5 Key Facts Everyone Should Know ??
As electronic waste (e-waste) continues to rise, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness and take action. To mark Global E-Waste Day, here are 5 key facts from the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024 report that everyone should know:
- E-Waste is growing fast: The rise in e-waste generation is outpacing the rise in formal recycling by a factor of almost 5.
- Gap in collection & recycling: Only 22.3% (13.8 billion kg) of the e-waste generated was documented as properly collected and recycled (2022).
- E-waste contains valuable materials: Every year, around $57 billion USD worth of raw materials, like gold, silver, and copper, are lost due to improper recycling of e-waste. When used to augment sound collection and recycling, appropriate data and laws can be extremely effective in accelerating environmental protection and the retention of valuable materials
- Harmful impact to health and the environment: Most e-waste is managed outside formal collection and recycling schemes. As a result of non-compliant e-waste management, 58 thousand kg of mercury and 45 million kg of plastics containing brominated flame retardants are released into the environment every year. This has a direct and severe impact on the environment and people’s health.
- 2030 Projections and Future Scenarios: It is projected that 82 billion kg of e-waste will be generated in 2030. From page 16 onwards there are scenario maps which show business-as-usual, progressive and aspirational forecasts. Take a look!?
?? On this Global E-Waste Day, let’s appreciate the need for collective action from governments, businesses, and individuals to improve recycling rates and reduce these growing threats.
