Below follows some HIGHLIGHTS of the Reports "STATE OF GLOBAL CLIMATE 2020" (by World Meteorological Organization, w/c included Nat.Meteor.& Hydrological Services, Regional & Global Climate Centers and United Nations with its associates FAO, IMF, UNESCO-IOC, IOM, UNEP< UNHCR & WFP of Dec 2020) + "CLIMATE AMBITION SUMMIT 2020" (by United Nations Organization & leaders of various countries in the weekend of 13-14 Dec,20), the "ARCTIC REPORT CARD 2020" (by NOAA) + OTHER RECENT PUBLICATIONS on the SUBJECT
FIRST, The SERIOUS QUESTIONS : *Can't true world leaders, decision-makers, influencers, celebrities (who usually surge up to gain from free global publicity), top CEOs & intellectuals, and alike powerful figures actually, realize for the benefit of Human civilization the dangerous significance of what WE are going thru and where WE are heading to? Pls read w/ attention the factual information below:
*Can't they sincerely apprehend the legacy for the goodness of Human Beings (real debt) that they are going to leave for their siblings (sons and grandsons) w/ the conditioned heartless make-money-only & business-as-usual behavior and outlook?
*Can't they foresee the food shortages, looting & insecurity, mass migrations/displacements, large-scale evacuations, death tolls, sanitary degradation, vandalism, terrorism, vast robbery & tiranny etc that these severe Climate Changes will cause and affect every single person (including the vast majority of the very rich; pls read the bottom of the article) even in the areas not directly hit by these catastrophes? It may become “Hell on Earth” (search & watch videos/movies on Youtube or otherwise, predicting what may happen under these circumstances)...
*Can't they genuinely grasp the fact that our Earth's climate (and its unprecedented extreme rapid changes) is going, ever faster, down the hill and that WE are in a quasi-inevitable collision course? What is the real meaning of reasoning and intelligence? Haven't we vastly evolved from the primates and then from the gatherers & hunters from 10,000 years ago and think, plan and act wisely? WE MUST ACT RESOLUTELY, BOLDLY and QUICKLY, RIGHT NOW, NOT UNLIKE most did in 2020 with the Covid-19 Pandemic.
WE MUST BE ALARMINGLY CONCERNED ABOUT OUR FUTURE and OUR LIVES. In fact, am not myself an alarmist, just being totally rational & realistic:
1) ONU General Secretary warned world leaders to declare a STATE OF CLIMATIC EMERGENCY (during the Climate Summit in late December 2020);
2) 2020 was one of the 3 warmest years on record, this despite we being in the midst of a " La Nina" season w/c normally cools down the Earth and the Covid-19 lockdown (if not for these, we might have had the warmest year ever. The 2011-2020 decade was indeed the warmest on record;
3) Ocean heat reached record levels & over 80% of the Oceans on the planet suffered marine heatwaves;
4) Global Oceans continued to face increased acidity, w/c among other effects weakens the shells/bones of many marine animals, making them more vulnerable and prone to diseases and death;
5) Average Global temperature in 2020 was at least 1.2 deg C warmer than pre-industrial Era (1850-1900), w/c for the layman/amateur it does NOT sound much because local daily weather (w/c is different from climate) fluctuations may vary much over 10 to 20 times that degree, but in Earth's temperature variation it is a monumental level in a short time basis;
6) 2020 had new extreme high temperatures on land, sea and especially in the Arctic;
7) Most impressive was the warming in the North Arctic/Asia regions w/c were over 5 deg C above average (with the upper regions striking ~7 deg C/ 12F);
8) 2020 reached record numbers (96) of Hurricanes and Typhoons. In North Atlantic the number was more than double the long term average;
9) We are losing up to 150 species per day according to new studies from the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The rapid loss of species could be over 1,000 times higher than the Natural Extinction Rate (i.e., the background extinction if humans were not around, as per the World Wide Fund- WWF);
10) According to the FAO, some countries/regions suffered a triple impact in 2020 considering: a) record Hurricanes (or other natural catastrophes) + b) Covid-19 + c) pre-existing Humanitarian crisis;
11) Defying reason, in spite of Covid-19 and the stopping of various industries and lockdowns across the world, atmospheric concentration of Greenhouse gases continued to increase;
12) Extreme flooding in some regions of SE Asia and Africa, caused multi-millions to endure huge scale population displacements and to survive further food insecurity issues;
13) We are under a long term downward decrease in Arctic sea ice extent & the Arctic region had the warmest summer since the 1980s and it was at least twice warmer than global average;
14) Greenland continued to lose ice extension at an alarming rate;
15) Despite the "La Nina" (w/c we are in the midst of) that tends to cool the planet down, Global Sea Level (as a result of increased heating), continued to rise reaching extreme levels, similar to the top of 2019-year. Heatwaves on land, especially nearby the coast lines and w/c we are at a record, further afflicted near-surface Ocean heatwaves as well;
16) Exceptional warm air temperatures across Eurasian Arctic resulted in greater ice loss than the 1981-2010 average (when more concrete & coordinated measurements started), however, it was a significantly greater loss than the record of 2018/19 seasonal year loss;
17) Ice sheets and glaciers outside Greenland region, continued to decrease in size/volume and it was especially higher in Arctic Canada and Alaska;
18) Drastic changes in storminess, air temperatures, sea ice status and ocean conditions led to an augmentation in coastal permafrost erosion. Permafrost stores much of the Earth's methane which impairs 86 times more powerful damaging effect compared to CO2 during a time frame of 20years. This means that methane gas release has a much more catastrophic Greenhouse (warming) impact than the most spoken about Carbon Dioxide (w/c is almost the only publicized to/known by the public). This is serious business!;
19) Exceptional flooding distressed multi-millions in S.Asia, E.Africa, China & Vietnam. India experienced the 2nd wettest monsoon season on record (for those who never experienced Asian monsoon, like I did, do not have the slightest idea of the scaring volume of water that pours down from the skies in short time frames and repeats over and again);
20) Gigantic dust storms in 2020 surged as a result of the influence of record low Arctic sea ice extent/volume;
21) South America endured extremely strong droughts w/ the worst regions being Paraguay, N. Argentina & W. Brazil. Before unthinkable, exceptional wildfires hit Brazil mainly in the western regions like the "Pantanal" wetland;
22) The U.S. grieved the largest fires ever recorded, including vast regions of droughts and exceptional heat;
23) Eastern Mediterranean sites faced all-time record temperature hights. Europe was affected by heatwaves as well, but not too bad as it did in 2019 (w/c does not diminish the degree of devastation and effect on the population and natural environments, especially when we take into account the current "La Nina" that helps cooling the Earth);
24) Australia and the Caribbean experienced heatwaves records. Some countries in the Middle East, like Kuwait & Iraq, bear up to 52deg C (an unthought-of record);
25) Adding drastic climate changes to the Covid-19 outbreak to the already "challenged peoples", the number of the world's population suffering reached an estimated 700 million or around 10% of the Planet's Human Beings, w/ about 750 million having to survive food insecurity. According to the FAO, approximately 135 million Humans lived under famine, emergency, severe poverty and overall surviving crisis. These, NOT accounting for the utmost loss rate of animal and plant life;
26) Furthering degradation measurement of environmental shocks: sand & dust storms, peatland & forest wildfires, general on-land deterioration, air pollution, desertification, far-reaching droughts, Ocean Sea Level rise + acidification + diminished levels of dissolved oxygen, mangrove degeneration & decline, coral reef bleaching and so on... all of them intensified;
27) There was significant evidence that there were changes in two of the most important factors that affect the climate on Earth (especially in the European continent and contiguous regions): a) the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC, main Ocean current that circulates especially in N. Atlantic and pushes around most of the globe's Ocean circulation/major water movements, weakened 25 to 30% since 1980 (If it eventually stops, we are doomed) as well as b) significant slowdown in the Jet Streams (especially in the Northern Hemisphere), w/c is the atmospheric topmost, usually-fast air circulation that significantly affects the climate down below at our usually viewed atmospheric weather (accompanied by us and daily spoken of in the News media). This makes the down-Earth weather more stalled/fixed in-place and also make the Stream wavier (meaning that the arm of the Jet Stream circulating around the Arctic region stretches down the middle and lower latitudes bringing extremely low temperatures within it while warm-hot temps outside its wave's crest/trough);
28) The Arctic region is warming 3 times faster than the rest of the globe and the higher Arctic territory 8 to 10 times even faster;
29) Boreal forests and Tundra are undergoing the most dramatic Climate Changes on Earth;
30) According to the United Nations Climate Change (UNFCCC): "Climate emergency continues: ....never has the gap between climate reality and action been wider. And never has the divide between the global negotiations and demands of society been deeper"...
These were all happening in parallel, worldwide in nature/over the environment, with our weather, while we were hiding from/eagerly following the daily News on Covid-19 and the listed above-unprecedented climate changes were unfolding in front of us without being duly publicized/broadcasted.
Meanwhile here am I putting days of effort in consolidating these dramatic and life-challenging information for the future of Human civilization survival (much more dangerous in the long run than the C-19) and most do not care even to read it, acknowledges and even thanks for it!.... So, if you are a real-grounded, rational, independent thinker, would better become keenly aware, conscious, and make an effort to join the fight against these altogether unprecedented quick-and-widespread climate changes while there is still a mere time left...
NO WONDER, seemingly unpretending very wealthy individuals/companies are rushing to invest in outer space flight aircrafts to "be able to abandon Earth" in the due time if necessary, like Elon Musk's Space X (Tesla), Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin (Amazon), Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic (Virgin Atlantic etc), Robert Bigelow's Bigelow Aerospace, Alan Bond's Reaction Engines, Boeing's CST-100, McDonnell Douglas's DC-X, Lockheed Martin's X-33, Northrop Gruman's Cygnus, ARCA Space group and Google's Larry Page (initially w/ Lunar Xprize Moon Express) as well as Google's Eric Schmidt, Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) and others. Are they aware of or planning for something that we don't? Meanwhile, 99.99% of Human Beings are minding their own lives unawares...Such is life!
Expect my upcoming article: "What is the relationship of Elon Musk's Space X (present), Adam & Eve (past) & the 12th Planet (Zacharia Sitchin) and Humanity (future)"...
