More than four years since the onset of the pandemic, childhood vaccination rates worldwide have yet to rebound to pre-pandemic levels, according to a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. The data highlights ongoing challenges in achieving adequate immunization coverage globally.
?
Key Findings
The report, analyzing 2023 vaccination rates across 185 countries, reveals that DTP3 (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) coverage remained at 84%, unchanged from 2022 and below the 86% recorded in 2019. This stagnation underscores persistent disruptions in healthcare services, logistical hurdles, vaccine hesitancy, and disparities in access to healthcare.
?
Regional Insights?
While some African countries showed promising progress in vaccination coverage, particularly for HPV vaccines in girls, many regions still face significant gaps. HPV vaccine coverage, critical for cervical cancer prevention, remains below targets in both high-income (56%) and low- to middle-income countries (23%).
?
Challenges and Concerns
The data also highlights alarming gaps in measles vaccination, leaving nearly 35 million children vulnerable to outbreaks. Measles outbreaks have been widespread, affecting 103 countries in the past five years. Countries in conflict zones, where over half of unvaccinated children reside, face heightened vulnerability to disease outbreaks.

Way forward?
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, emphasized the urgency of closing immunization gaps globally. He stressed that measles outbreaks indicate broader vulnerabilities and urged concerted efforts to ensure universal vaccine access, especially in conflict-affected areas.
?
Conclusion
The report underscores the critical need for sustained global efforts to restore and improve childhood immunization rates. Closing the gap requires enhanced investments in primary healthcare, community workers, and addressing vaccine hesitancy to safeguard children worldwide against preventable diseases.
