Global Black Pepper Exports: Overview
The?global export of black pepper?is estimated to increase at a robust CAGR of 2.7% during 2017–2022. Geographically, India and Vietnam are the two leading exporters of black pepper in the world. In 2016, these two countries accounted for nearly 60% of worldwide black pepper exports.
In value terms, Vietnam ($874M), Indonesia ($194M), India ($127M), and Madagascar ($5.90M) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 38% share of global exports. They were followed by Malaysia (7%), China (6%), Brazil (5%), Sri Lanka (5%), Ecuador (4%), and Bangladesh (3%). Cambodia registered the highest growth rate of the top exporting countries (+75% per year).?
Due to the growing demand for pepper worldwide, the market use is expected to increase over the next seven years. Expanding with an expected CAGR of + 1.2% for the seven-year period from 2018 to 2025, the market volume is projected to reach 840K tonnes by the end of 2025.
Black pepper global trade?
The global black pepper export volume in the first quarter of 2020 was about 45,000 tons, down 18% over the same period last year. Compared with the previous quarter, it decreased by 15%.
The decline in global pepper exports has a large impact on its major exporting countries. Vietnam’s exports in the first quarter of 2020 were 3,500 tons, a decrease of 21% over the same period last year. Compared with the previous quarter, it decreased by 31%. India’s exports in the first quarter of 2020 were around 8,000 tons, down 16% over the same period last year. Compared with the previous quarter, it decreased by 26%.
However, some countries still have an upward trend in exports. Brazil’s exports in the first quarter of 2020 were 1,800 tons, an increase of 7% over the same period last year.
Black pepper export from India?
India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of black pepper in the world. The total global production of black pepper is around 3,50,000 – 4,00,000 tonnes per annum. India produces around 2,60,000 tonnes per annum, which constitutes around 75% of the total world pepper production.
Black pepper export from India has taken a major hit in the first three quarters of this year, registering a drop of almost 22%. With the ban on exports to EU countries and other factors such as low prices in the international market, Indian exporters have suffered a huge setback.
The total black pepper exports stood at 26,000 tons during April-December 2018 against 33,000 tons during the same period last year. The overall export value of black pepper has also dropped by almost 20% during the same period.
Indian pepper is being exported to many countries. The export of Indian pepper has increased in recent times. Export of black pepper from India has increased by nearly 30 percent in the first five months of 2018-19.
According to statistics from the Spices Board, Indian pepper exports have been at 50,852 tonnes in the first five months, a 30 percent increase over the previous year’s 39,212 tonnes. The price of Indian black pepper on the international market is also high. This has led to an increase in exports.
