Global Accessibility Awareness Day, is today.
My posts leading to today, have focused on the how of accessibility, but today I want to focus on the why.
?For me, I'm passionate about accessibility because I live with low vision.
?This is invisible to many people because I can read text in books and online platforms without assistive technology. The big challenges for me are when I am in large crowds and navigating uneven ground. This is because:
?So, imagine how you see a set of stairs. Then imagine if it looked like a slope and consider the impacts. Then imagine what it's like if this applies for any ups and downs in the footpath or judging the depth and distance from public transport to the "ground".
?This is my normal. I've learnt how to navigate this reality, but it still "trips me up" at times (sometimes literally).
?With over one billion people living with disability we can all help by getting a better understanding of what that means in managing the day to day.
?To help you on your journey, the following TED Talk (youtube.com, runtime of 11minutes and 21 seconds) will provide you with another person's why. It will also tell you why it should be important for everyone, with or without a disability.
