A glimpse of our PYP Professional Development workshop in action
Making the PYP Happen: Implementing Agency
Contributed by: Mariyam Baxamusa, IBEN
The virtual workshop kicked off with the "Raise a Finger" activity, a virtual adaptation of "Walk the Line." This engaging activity encouraged participants to connect with one another, exchange virtual air fist bumps, and foster a strong sense of unity.
We then delved into the concept of agency, inviting participants to create posters and songs to showcase their understanding. By incorporating an element of enjoyment, the session remained both engaging and enriching for everyone involved.
Collaboration was a central focus throughout the workshop. Participants engaged in a hands-on exercise to design a transdisciplinary unit of inquiry. Through exchanging ideas and building on one another’s suggestions, they gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of collaboration and its impact on the learning process.
The workshop also encouraged participants to apply the Approaches to Learning (ATL) framework through thought-provoking activities. These included tackling dilemmas faced by personas and redesigning school spaces to foster a more inclusive learning environment. By engaging in these exercises, participants honed their problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills in a practical and meaningful way.
Ultimately, the workshop challenged participants to step out of their comfort zones and equipped them with a diverse range of strategies and tools to implement in their classrooms. This hands-on approach empowered them to build a repertoire of skills that could enhance their teaching practices and positively impact student outcomes.
