A glimpse of our MYP Professional Development workshop in action
MYP Category 1 Workshop: Design
Contributed by: Patrick Ong, IBEN
Having worked with Malaysian state schools as an IBEN, I understood the crucial need for contextualization in this Category 1 MYP Design Workshop for the MARA school teachers.?Two key considerations were necessary: first, the language difference, as these teachers taught and planned in Malay rather than English, and second, their adherence to a recently revised national curriculum.
With the help of three IBEN colleagues proficient in the language, translating content proved manageable and supported the participants’ learning. Contextualizing examples and approaches for introducing MYP elements, such as the role of concepts, the impact of contextual explorations, and the philosophy and practices behind assessment, are very effective. Using examples from the Malaysian curriculum (KSSM) also fostered an appreciation for the MYP as a flexible framework that accommodates a wide range of curricula.
Engaging in IBEN work like this enriches my practice as an MYP educator, workshop leader, and lifelong learner. The value of contextualizing learning and establishing a safe space for inquiry into the programme provides a broader perspective on how the MYP can function in diverse contexts. It also deepens my appreciation of the programme and the IB’s approach to curriculum and pedagogy.
