A glimpse of our DP Professional Development workshop in action
Extended essay in focus: A one-day intensive
Contributed by: Sreemati Sen and Dr. Bhavika Vyas
The day started with the participants introducing themselves by telling the group which attribute of the learner profile is important for a supervisor of the extended essay to develop. This was a fun activity focusing on the connection between the IB core and the learner profile attributes. After briefly discussing the basic requirements of the extended essay the participants in groups focused on a discussion on roles and responsibilities of the different stakeholders involved in the extended essay process. Each group prepared a presentation and was followed by a gallery/station walk.
Next, we moved our focus onto assessment criteria and exemplar marking. The participants unpacked the general assessment criteria and then in subject groups they unpacked the subject specific criteria. This was a great take-away material for the participants. This was followed by exemplar marking and comparing their marks with the examiner marks and comments.
The focus of the third session was reading and discussing the examiner report. The participants worked in groups to extract from the report which points were meant for the supervisor and which needed to be funneled back to students. Each group then shared their findings with the bigger group, which led to a fruitful discussion on the use of the examiner report.
However, the highlight of the session was each group of participants formulating a research question based on an article on climate change that was given to all the groups. This helped the participants realize that even if the idea is the same each subject group looks at it from a different perspective to come up with a research question.
