A glimpse into the future: CCP's June newsletter

MESSAGE FROM DEBORA B. FREITAS LóPEZ

Last week marked the end of the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs’ 34th annual Leadership in Strategic Communication Workshop (LSCW). For three transformational weeks, 21 participants from around the world – including from Guatemala, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, among others – gathered in Baltimore to hone their skills as leaders in social and behavior change (SBC).

The immersive program focuses on learning by doing and understanding the newest trends and best practices from making a strategic plan to measuring the success of a program. It is also about making connections sure to last a lifetime.

Now, these new graduates are part of a vibrant network of more than 5,000 alumni across 100+ countries which also includes those who have completed workshops we give in places from the Philippines to Ethiopia and those led by?our sister organizations?in Nigeria and India.

As SBC leaders, they are ready to work alongside providers, communities, and other key actors to address challenges in various health areas – from maternal, newborn, and child health to global health security. They are equipped with proven tools and materials that guide them as they design, implement, and monitor and evaluate SBC programs that aim to improve health and development outcomes.

I was wowed by the presentations made at the end of the workshop, where participants shared innovative campaign ideas on everything from opioid addiction to provider behavior to smoking cessation to family planning.

As one participant said, “take the chance and invest in yourself. Three weeks after starting this workshop, I have transformed in my personal and professional capacity and feel stronger as a leader and a public health practitioner. Top-notch faculty and learning experiences with colleagues from all over the world.”

Equipped with their learnings from the LSCW, I look forward to seeing these SBC leaders – who are now part of CCP’s family – inspire positive change.
