Glimmers of Connection and Purpose: A Reflection on Yesterday’s Moments

Glimmers of Connection and Purpose: A Reflection on Yesterday’s Moments

Glimmers are those small but powerful moments that spark joy, calm, or connection, reminding us of the beauty and meaning in our lives. Coined by Deb Dana, a clinical social worker and expert in Polyvagal Theory, glimmers represent the opposite of triggers—they help us feel safe, grounded, and uplifted. These fleeting instances, like the warmth of a friend’s laughter or the satisfaction of a meaningful accomplishment, may seem minor at first glance, but they hold incredible potential to anchor us in positivity. By noticing and savoring these moments, we can cultivate resilience, deepen our relationships, and stay aligned with our purpose, even in the midst of challenges.

Breakfast with Rupa and Jeanine: Glimmers of Friendship and Shared Purpose

The day began with breakfast alongside two of my dearest friends, Rupa Datta and Jeanine Silversmith . Although we had crossed paths many times in the environmental sector over the years, it wasn’t until 2020, during a racial equity cohort hosted by the City of Providence Office of Sustainability, that we discovered how deeply aligned we were in our commitment to equity, justice, and changework.

That initial moment of realization remains a happy memory—a foundational glimmer. Since then, we’ve made it a point to meet every few months. These gatherings, though brief, are filled with animated conversation, warm hugs, and heartfelt “I love yous.” They remind me of the power of collective effort and the importance of finding joy in this challenging work.

Collaborating with an Upcoming Leader in the Zoo Field

Later, I met with one of my team members, who is expecting her second child. Together, we worked on planning training modules for 2025—sessions designed to equip zoo staff with tools to inspire pro-environmental behavior, create community through a shared love of nature, and establish sound policy and protocol for working with both animals and people.

Her nurturing energy and leadership inspire me. She seamlessly balances her roles as an incredible mom and a rising leader in the zoo field, bringing warmth and purpose to everything she does. I left the meeting grateful to have someone so compassionate and capable on my team.

Rachel Briggs’ Program: A Glimmer of Inspiration

Watching my friend Rachel Briggs teach is always a transformative experience. Last night, she delivered a program through a project I manage, and once again, I found myself in awe of her dedication and passion.

Rachel is a true force—a child advocate, trauma-informed educator, poet, and artist. Her ability to weave creativity, compassion, and critical thinking into her work ensures that every child’s unique needs are met. She reminds me of the impact one individual can have when they approach their work with love, intention, and a deep understanding of others’ experiences.

An Unexpected Encounter with an Old Project

As I left the library where Rachel’s program was held, I passed an e-waste collection bin—a relic of my first sustainability project outside of the zoo. Seeing it again stopped me in my tracks. That project hadn’t gone as I’d hoped. At times, I felt like I had failed. But it had been a critical step in my journey, one that ultimately led me to pursue a master’s degree and deepen my commitment to advocacy for social justice and sustainability.

The bin was a beautiful, humbling reminder that this work is long, often messy, and much bigger than any one person. Our efforts send out ripples, and those ripples matter.

Yesterday’s glimmers were a patchwork of friendship, purpose, inspiration, and love. They serve as a powerful reminder that even in the most chaotic moments, there are sparks of light that guide us. These moments are why I continue to show up—with love, respect, patience, and humility—to create ripples in this big, beautiful, imperfect world. If you've read this far, I want you to know how much I appreciate the gift of your time. I would love to hear about your glimmers in the comments below.

Thank you so much! Wow, I am speechless. I appreciate you and the your allyship. You are the type of leader we need in this world. ??
