Glenmorangie serves up a sweet treat

Glenmorangie ‘A Tale of Ice Cream’ – if that’s not an attention grabbing name, we don’t know what is!

The latest creative limited edition offering from the genius mind of Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, has managed to fuse a mainstay desert of many a childhood with a proper grown-up drink.

This, the fifth release in the distillery’s award winning ‘A Tale of’ series, invokes flavours synonymous with a typical ice cream parlour. Luxuriously creamy notes of vanilla, punctuated by the fresh sweetness of ripe peaches and the richness of coconut and toffee apple.

The secret ingredient?

It’s more of a process than an ingredient. The Glenmorangie Company is already known for its smooth sweet vanilla flavours, so to intensify those notes, Dr Bill and Master Blender, Gillian Macdonald, combined whisky from two casks. The first were from single malt aged in bourbon casks, providing the rich, sweet toffee notes we love, along with the expected flavours of vanilla, peach and orange.

They combined this with whisky which had been matured in high vanillin casks. By toasting new oak casks, a higher than usual vanilla flavour is achieved, along with essences of coconut.

The result

Nothing will convey the result better than Glenmorangie’s own tasting notes:

Colour - Bronze

Aroma?- A burst of Manuka honey, with lemon-flavoured butter candy, baking raisin bread, candied orange peel, peaches, toffee and a hint of spice. With a splash of water, there is vanilla crème anglaise, a hint of coconut and a suggestion of almond marzipan.

Taste - The texture is thick, rich and creamy. It is followed by a huge burst of sweet and spicy flavours – brioche, almond marzipan, honeycomb, fudge, lemon sherbet and desiccated coconut. Spices warm the palate, with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove.

Finish - A long, lingering aftertaste combines hints of toffee apple, sweet popcorn and a note of aniseed.?

A sumptuous desert in a glass, with the addition of a chocolate flake on the side, naturally!
