Glenda's Story

Glenda's Story

Glenda is a resilient grandmother raising her five grandchildren in a small town in Kentucky. With their mother currently in prison, Glenda took on the role of caretaker, despite her limited resources and the challenges that came with it. For years, she managed to provide a safe and loving home, but as time passed, her house began to show signs of wear and tear. The most pressing issue was the roof, which had deteriorated to the point that rainwater leaked through the ceiling, creating black mold, and damaging the walls and floors.

When Michelle Perez, the Executive Director of Catholic Mission Trips (CMT), was scouting for potential projects in Kentucky, the Missionaries of Charity recommended she visit Glenda's house. Upon arriving, Michelle immediately saw the extent of the damage. Water damage was evident throughout the home. It was clear that a new roof was essential before any other repairs could be done. However, due to the steep pitch and height of the roof, it was too dangerous for the CMT missionaries and their usual volunteers to work on.

Despite the challenges, the CMT team was determined to help Glenda and her grandchildren. Our staff leaders started a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of a new metal roof. The CMT community rallied together, and the response was overwhelming. Not only did they raise significant funds, but our contractors also pledged to match whatever amount was collected. Together, they managed to raise the $6,000 needed for materials and the specialized roofers required to complete the project safely.

Within weeks, the new metal roof was installed, ensuring that Glenda's home was finally dry and secure. With the funding in place for the roof, CMT was able to proceed with additional repairs, replacing the moldy drywall and installing new flooring. Glenda's home was transformed, providing a safe and healthy environment for her and her grandchildren.

This project was more than just a construction effort; it was a testament to the power of faith, community, and the unwavering commitment of Catholic Mission Trips to serve those in need. Through the generosity of donors, the hard work of volunteers, and the dedication of CMT staff and contractors, Glenda and her family received more than just a roof over their heads—they received a renewed sense of hope and support from a community that cares deeply for them.

Please pray for Glenda, who has been in and out of the hospital since June.
