The Glass Bubble Effect

The Glass Bubble Effect

I wrote a political post on my Facebook page several years ago. It was very clever. I made great points. I was funny. There was no foul language or direct insults, but boy, I was going to put those other idiots in their place. Remember, it's only "Social Media". It's fun.

Right?

Wrong!

I offended several people. I offended some friends. I offended a couple of family members. Worst of all, I offended a mentor who had been a great source of help to me in those previous years.

Then arguing began to occur on the post. Others began to insult each other. What made me laugh only a day before now didn't feel quite so good.

Not only did I no longer feel good about the post. I also began to realize that several of my clients are Facebook friends of mine!

We live in a glass bubble now and everybody is watching. Including your customers. I am not saying you shouldn't be yourself. What I am saying, is to THINK before you post something.

Is it T rue

Is it H elpful

is it I nspiring

Is it N ecessary

Is it K ind

If it isn't, maybe you should consider not posting it.

Outstanding message! Moms. Dads. Students. Adults of all walks of life!

Great post, Joe. Remember when we all, or at least a very few of us, used to write letters to the editor? Social media is not the editorial page of our local paper. There's something about social media that prevents thoughtful discussion and discourse on political and social subjects. Just don't do it.
