Welcome CFMT's New VP!

Dear Community Partners and Friends,

I am honored to introduce myself as Erika Burnett, the new Vice President of Community Development at Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT).?

As I step into this role, I do so with deep reverence for the lineage that shapes who I am today: I am Aletha and Dwayne’s daughter, Elizabeth and Juble’s granddaughter, Loretta and Big Ed’s granddaughter, Essie and Flora’s great-granddaughter, and Cora’s great, great-great-granddaughter.?

A question often arises in the spaces I occupy: “Who are your people?” While my answer is rooted in my genetic lineage, being part of this community has taught me that we are all each other’s people.

This sense of belonging, however, may only come naturally to some. For others, especially those of marginalized identities and lived experiences, it requires an intentional invitation. When I first walked into CFMT a little over a year ago, I asked Hal Cato, CEO of CFMT, "Who are our people?" This question continues to guide my work, especially as I consider the historical gaps in funding and access that have left many community leaders and their organizations under-resourced.

Our newly established Community Development department is dedicated to addressing these disparities while creating equity and collaboration. While we are choosing Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) as our public launch pad, we are deeply committed to carrying the spirit of thoughtful inclusion and intentional transformation throughout the year, building a culture of giving that transcends traditional boundaries. My invitation to you is simple but profound:

Get curious: Explore the rich diversity of our community, confront your own assumptions and invite new perspectives.

Get a little uncomfortable: Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone, dig beneath the waterline and explore the values, experiences and beliefs that inform the meaningful work here in our communities.

Flex your muscles around convening and collaboration: What does it look like to create safe, healthy affirming spaces to gather, ideate and generate action? We can achieve more together.?

Be bold: It's ok to not know all the answers. Be willing to go where you have not gone before and intentionally support spaces that embody a diversity of thought, experiences, and identities.

As we embark on this journey together, I am excited about the possibilities. Let us work together to build a more inclusive and thriving Middle Tennessee.

With gratitude,

Erika R. Burnett Vice President of Community Development Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee
