Giving Slack Slack Will Lead Your Teams to Discord
Even before the pandemic, we've been increasingly living inside of online collaboration apps. Why are organizations still making basic security mistakes with them? Is this a case of shadow IT or do these apps present unique challenges?
This week’s episode is hosted by me, David Spark , producer of CISO Series , and Mike Johnson , CISO, Rivian . Joining us is our sponsored guest, Rich Dandliker , chief strategist, Veza .
Most cybersecurity startups fail
It comes down to product fit and growing past scale. That’s the takeaway from Ross Haleliuk , head of product at LimaCharlie . A lot of this applies to startups of all stripes. But cybersecurity demands a unique balancing act. On the one hand, some startups develop a feature rather than a company. Yet, to paraphrase Rich Dandliker, how do these companies keep a maniacal focus on their product while building themselves out as a larger company? The key is to keep talking to customers rather than focusing on competitors.?
This time the ban on a new technology will work!?
Whether it’s ChatGPT or BYOD, new tech can cause businesses to reflexively shout “Ban it!” A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 10 percent of respondents said generative AI tools were banned at work. Some of this comes down to the fact that privately-available large language models only just started to enter the market. But as Mike Johnson noted this could signal a changing view on how companies handle intellectual property. “There is value in training public models on that,” said Johnson.
Collaboration apps can be risky business
Many of these tools lack central governance, leading business units to spin them up without oversight. Linda Rosencrance at Computerworld recently looked at the security implications of this. This isn’t shadow IT anymore, argued Mike Johnson. It’s just a standard IT practice. With the network effects implicit with these apps, Rich Dandliker points out, “It becomes more valuable to get on the same universal standard.”

How Security Leaders Deal with Intense Stress
"I think you can do all these things, but I think the most important thing to keep in mind is it's not so much the rest of the company works for you, but an acknowledgement of as much as our job is hard and sometimes we conflict with other parts of the org, security is everybody's job." - Geoff Belknap , CISO, LinkedIn
