The Giving Report: Our 2018 Philanthropy

2018 was a milestone year for our philanthropic work at Liberty Mutual, marking the 15th anniversary of Liberty Mutual Foundation and the expansion of our Liberty Torchbearers program. Reflecting on this past year, I’m keenly aware of what an honor it is to support the life-changing work of our community partners and the philanthropic passions and expertise of our employees.

Philanthropy is at our core, both as a business and as individuals. Together with our employees, Liberty Mutual contributed $45 million toward vitally important nonprofit causes across the country. Our ambition is to help people move forward confidently and to be there for them when their need is greatest.

This goal also guides our philanthropic mission: to empower people who are experiencing homelessness, advance access for people with disabilities and expand educational opportunities for underserved students.

In 2018, we weren’t the only ones celebrating a special year. Three of our close partners were as well — Bridge Over Troubled Waters, More Than Words and Artists For Humanity — as significant investments from Liberty Mutual came to fruition. New facilities and renovations will enable these organizations to reach a greater number of under-resourced teens and young adults, including those experiencing homelessness, and to support them with job training, housing and educational opportunities. Having participated on site visits at all of these organizations, I was thrilled to experience firsthand the before-and-after of their transformations.

Through Liberty Torchbearers, we’ve found more and more ways for our employees to stand alongside our community through GiveServe and Volunteer with Liberty — all under the Liberty Torchbearers banner. During Serve with Liberty, I was proud to join fellow Liberty employees at Cradles to Crayons and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy and to see the impact of our collective work.

Moving forward, we’ll keep striving to be a trusted partner, to leverage the commitment and compassion of our employees, and to put the full strength of Liberty behind the causes that we care about.

I'm always so proud of having started my career at such an outstanding and impactful place. 13 years somewhere and you pick up a few things! I hope none of it wears off. I'm very proud of the core value Liberty represents - treat people with dignity and respect... (while helping) people feel safe and secure. Liberty continues towards greater success while never letting those core values slip. And it's awesome to watch!!! David Long and Melanie Foley thank you for the inspirational example!

David, thanks for sharing. Our company, Salesforce, is comitted to similar causes with the same passion. We have a large presance in the Boston metro area and I'd love to spearhead a joint volunteer program. Please let me know who I can connect with.

David, I’d like to highlight a cause I care very much about as an Australian: Human-induced climate disruption and the potential for the Adani coal mine to catalyse irreversible warming if it goes ahead in our Galilee Basin (a pristine desert oasis populated with wild endangered species, land that is sacred to our indigenous population). Adani has already polluted our Great Barrier Reef at their Abbott Point site and failed to pay the fine, in fact, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands as they challenge it in court. Also, more coal will not lift people out of poverty ~ not when it exacerbates heat waves such as the one currently killing people in India. https://www.dw.com/en/india-heat-wave-experts-urge-more-can-be-done-as-death-toll-rises/a-49191772 There are alternative forms of energy and we must encourage them instead now, and stop enabling the coal industry. I understand they are needing this project to be insured and that Liberty Mutual is considering this. I respectfully request that your organisation does not enable any further development of this mine by agreeing to insure the project. #StopAdani Thank you.

I am so proud to work for our company. We build relationships, encourage one another, and go above and beyond to help our communities.

I have greatly expanded my volunteer work since starting at Liberty. I’m forever grateful for the encouragement and support from such a giving company.
