Giving the gift of support to friends and family is easier than you think
For many people, the holiday season is filled with joyful celebrations with family and friends. But for those coping with loss, separated from their family, or going through other personal challenges, the holidays can be anything but happy. And sometimes, the people around them struggle to know how to offer support.
From research we conducted with SurveyMonkey, we know that more than 60% of people who’ve experienced hardship find the holiday season more emotionally challenging than other times of year – and nearly half do not feel supported by those closest to them.
Many of us hesitate to reach out because we worry about what to say or don’t think our loved ones want to be reminded of their struggle. The good news is it's easier than you think to get it right. Most people are happy receiving a supportive text or card, or just to spending time with their loved ones. Small actions make a big difference.
At optionb.org/holidays, you’ll find holiday cards that strike the right tone (developed in partnership with PAPYRUS and available in stores and online as free e-cards), tips for being a supportive “plus one” at holiday parties, and much more. And if you need a little extra support yourself this holiday season, we offer expert resources and online groups to connect you with people who’ve faced similar challenges.
This holiday season, let's commit to do better. Let’s give the gift of love, friendship, and support to the people in our lives who need it most. #OptionBThere
