Giving Back: The short history of the OD Chat Group

A little over two years ago, I decided it was time to share my knowledge and experience and give back to the profession that has been my passion and life for more than 40 years. I started the online OD Chat Group for that purpose.

My vision was to create opportunities for OD and IO practitioners from around the globe to get together and share their experiences. I didn't want formal presentations, with slide decks, or consultants trying to pitch their services or books. The goal was to host informal discussions and conversations, where anyone could ask questions and share their thoughts regardless of their level of expertise. I thought it would be great if some experienced experts joined us.

Many of my friends and associates are experts and thought-leaders in OD, IO, organizational change, and more. I asked them if they would share a Saturday morning to chat with the group once in a while. Not unsurprisingly, they welcomed the idea. The really good ones are committed to helping and sharing knowledge. It is a core value of our profession.

Today, I am presenting you with the opportunity to join the OD Chat Group. It is free. There are no dues or fees. When we started, there was only a handful of members. Today, there are close to 200 members from around the world. At our last meeting participants from India, Canada, Turkey, South Africa, China, England, and the U.S. joined in the conversation. It's exciting to hear and learn from others in different parts of the world. Where else can you gain that experience for free?

If you would like to become a member of the OD Chat Group please send me an email ([email protected]) requesting to join. If we are connected on LinkedIn, I will add you to the mailing list. I send two to three emails a month with information about our meetings. You will not be spammed and your information will not be sold or shared with others.

Hi Alan, I'm so blessed of being one of your first participants in this group. I joined as a student in grad school so I could learn even more. I remember early in the development we had six people on the calls (I had my own technical difficulties Saturday so I couldn't get on). It's really the highlight of my month to log on those Saturdays and sink myself into the learning and discussions. I have learned so much about OD/IO and have a great respect for the profession. Thanks to you again for stepping out and offering to develop a group of such great people from all over the world.
