Giving Back

Through the recent trends within the oil and gas industry I have seen a great number of my colleagues that I have grown with in this industry released (laid off). As companies in this industry make adjustments to survive in the business environment, most of the released employees are older and/or less valuable to the company.

This got me to thinking about where I have come from and what it took to get me to this point. What do I need to do to survive another cycle in the oil and gas industry? That is when I realized the same people that helped me get here are the same people being released (Old Timers). Unfortunately, it is part of the cycle when the system is washed clean, and room is made for the next generation. Sort of like the passing of the torch.

These are the guys that taught me about straight and proud. Putting it together only one time. Never looking back at where I have been but look forward at where I am going. They taught me about pride for the guy next to me. About standing toe to toe for what is right. About P&IDs, piping plans, red lines, material take, etc. They showed me what makes sense and what doesn't. Doing take off’s and scoping a project. How to calculate DI’s and that all welders are not bad. Expecting more from my crew and making sure never to ask them for what I have never done. Make certain they have seen me doing it. Make sure never to leave a man in a bind. Respect is earned not given, and don't take it for granted when you have earned it...EVER.

So where does this leave you? The guy that survives the downturn and comes out the other end? I think first and foremost you should thank “GOD” for being blessed. Thank the folks that helped you get where you are. They are the ones that made you, and that they saw something in you that you didn't know was there. They pushed you to become who you are. They gave you the skills and guidance and believed in what you would become.

Most importantly, remember it as a gift. Someone gave this to you to nurture and develop into important skills. When all the dust settles from yet again a slowdown in our industry, find someone. That kid in the back room, the guy out in the cubicle, or even the Operator in the field….Pass the gift on…..

We are ultimately left in the hands of GOD! There are millions of industries....Billions of human beings to be taken care off.....Eventually, Industry will come back!

Today I officially crossed a threshold, I was entirely oblivious to or existed. I’m going to give you a little…
