Giving Back during the Pandemic
About 3 months ago I had a quick conversation with an old high school friend about how she was coping during the Covid-19 pandemic. She was continuing to social distance and take precautions. She also told me about the Mississauga Food Bank and how much of financial and social impact events like these have. As we talked I realized that the national food banks have experienced such a massive increase in demand as more and more folks are out of work. This really inspired me to jump in and help. We take so much for granted and sometimes overlook the little things we can do to help those in need. It was such a simple activity to clean out my pantry, fridge and storage. As I started collecting items to donate I realized that many of the people I know would be happy to contribute. So taking to social media I put a call out to friends, colleagues and family for their support. I told everyone I would be happy to drive around and collect items using a mask and gloves as they put their donations into my car trunk. Within minutes I had so many replies and direct messages. It was such an awesome feel good experience to see everyone come together. Below are some pics of what I was able to donate and then what I was able to collect from others. I managed to fill my trunk within a few hours.
So then I thought why can't this become a regular thing? I was able to secure a trunk full of donations for the Mississauga Food Bank so let's go at again. I contacted the folks at the food bank and asked what items they were really in need of and then a few weeks later put another call out using social media for donations. The power of purpose and kindness of family and friends really impressed me. And yet again within a few hours I was able to secure another full trunk of donations. It was amazing to see everyone pitch in. My first month I had 12 people donate and then month 2 saw an entire different bunch of folks offer up goods. Yet again, I was able to deliver an entire truck of food and other necessities to those in need and impacted by Covid-19.
So now I was able to secure some promotional images of what I was trying to do. I decided I would make it a monthly routine. Using Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp as my messaging platforms I've been able to secure a full trunk 3 months in a row. It's been amazing to see all different folks, ages and groups donate. I will continue this tradition moving forward regardless of pandemic or not. Helping communities thrives by doing something as easy as collecting donations goes such a long way. The Mississauga Food Bank is opened Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and is located at 3121 Universal Drive. They accept all forms of donations. I will continue to collect food items and I ask to colleagues and peers who live in Mississauga if you ever wish to contribute or donate please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm happy to drive by to collect items. I will be collecting this weekend once again July 25th and July 26th. If you wish to donate click on any of the images to be directed to their website. It has been a pleasure helping those most impacted by the pandemic. Thank you everyone and have a great day!
