Give Yourself The Edge - Edge Computing

With the increasing adoption of #CloudServices, together with the #InternetOfThings and the ever-growing number of ‘smart’ devices, data traffic between centralised #DataCentres and the sources and consumers of data continues to grow. This is pushing network bandwidth to its limits and reducing processing speeds due to increased latency.

One solution to these connectivity challenges is to bring the points from which data originates, is processed, stored, or consumed closer together – Edge Computing.

For some companies there is also still a need, or a preference, to run some of their IT locally which can benefit from #EdgeComputing. For some it may be impossible or unfeasible to create a dedicated computer room, for others it may result in standard IT racks being used in areas that are far from ideal, such as offices or industrial environments.

This can result in employees being exposed to noise and heat from IT equipment, or the IT equipment itself not being correctly cooled and exposed to environmental contaminants such as dust.

This is where the latest Micro Data Centres can help deliver the benefits of Edge Computing.

What is a Micro Data Centre?

A Micro Data Centre or MDC can vary in size from a container unit with multiple IT racks in, to individual racks designed for use in specific areas. Each alternative provides a self-contained #DataCentre that provides the IT equipment with power, cooling & connectivity.

In this article we look at the range of EDGE? Micro Data Centres that have been designed to meet the demands of localised computing requirements in offices, warehouses, and factories. The range comprises of air-cooled, air-conditioned, or water-cooled models, providing an MDC for every local computing requirement.

All models are pre-configured with intelligence, security, and environmental monitoring from the factory for rapid deployment, providing a real alternative for the creation of a computer room and removing the infrastructure requirements this involves.

The EDGE Micro Data Centre range includes:

Air-cooled Soundproof Rack

The #EDGE 3 is an air-cooled, soundproof cabinet that is capable of cooling IT loads up to 12kW and reducing equipment noise up to 28.5dBA.

  • Available in three cabinet heights: 12U, 24U or 42U.?Cooling is provided by energy saving and hot-swappable EC fan technology.
  • Local LCD display on cabinet door shows cabinet status and major monitoring points.
  • Two-point locking swing handle provides security with electronic upgrade available.
  • Dynamic load capacity of 750Kgs increasing to a static load capacity of 1,500Kgs.
  • EDGE 3 is IP44 rated as standard with option to increase this to IP54.
  • Host of other options available.

Air-conditioned Rack

The EDGE 5 is an air-conditioned cabinet that has a cooling capacity of up to 2.5Kw, and can maintain a required internal cabinet temperature even when sited in a room with an ambient temperature of 35°C/95°F.

  • 800mm wide x 1200mm deep and available in either 36U or 42U heights.
  • Static Weight Loading 1500 Kg; Dynamic Weight Loading 750Kg.
  • EDGE Management System (EMS) provides real-time environmental monitoring with on-cabinet LCD display showing local alarm states and monitoring points.
  • Anti-air-recirculation kit helps save energy and maintain hardware performance.
  • Clear glass door enables equipment to be viewed without opening the door.

Water-cooled Rack

EDGE 7 features a 300mm wide side-mounted water-cooled cooling unit that utilises the same heat exchange cooling technology found in the ColdLogik cabinets and is capable of cooling loads up to 70kW.

  • Available in two heights 42U and 48U, and in two widths 600mm or 800mm. All rack depths are 1400mm.
  • Standard depth of 1400mm allows for the increase in new server depths, higher heat loads and extra space for cabling.
  • Modular design enables additional cooling units and cabinets to be deployed as demand increases. Each side cooler is capable of cooling two server cabinets.
  • Optional extras include: advance fire and smoke detection system, rack access control system, intelligent PDUs, UPSs and Management Control System.
