Give up or grow up!

Give up or grow up!

It sounds harsh but that’s the reality. We either keep moving forward or we stop!

There’s a lot of noise out there at the moment, with lots of doom & gloom talk, perpetuated by the media. It’s hard to stay focused & not get distracted. It’s hard to not feel overwhelmed, under pressure & a little bit out of control. If we allow ourselves to be distracted, then we will lose the battle.

And for some of us, there have been some rough personal times too, so how do you keep going when everything seems so difficult?

What we do know is that false optimism isn’t going to help but choosing how we think & how we act will.

It’s time to hunker down & focus on what we can control & remain focused on the long-term goal & the steps that you need to take to continue to move forward, even if it feels like the world is moving backwards.

Easier said than done & that’s what this week’s newsletter is all about – giving you some tools that can help to bring some clarity in these uncertain times & find ways to stay focused on what is important & more importantly, what you can control.

You need to have a plan B… And a plan C & a plan D. It doesn’t mean you’re planning for any of those to happen, it means you’ve considered what might happen & can smash the emergency glass if needed.

It’s something that I do naturally in life but I know it doesn’t come naturally to everyone, so here’s this week’s business tip, life hack & find of the week to help you…

And if that fails, just jump in some puddles with some dogs... It's fun & it clears your mind!

BETTER BUSINESS : Are you ready for a recession?

I am always nervous that, with the strong help from the media, we talk ourselves into a 'mental recession' & by that I mean, we lose sight of the opportunities that a downturn can create. However, as I said in my intro, we can’t create false optimism either.

The reality is that the world is going through some unprecedented times & like it or not, there will be some sort of downturn & that is a recession.

Recessions don’t have to be bad – I can give you countless stories of businesses that have not only survived but thrived throughout a recession.

It’s good in some ways as it can force us to relook at our business, make some tough calls & ensure that we are laser-sharp focused on the end goal & the structure that we need to get through i

Reality is most organisations don’t know how to prepare for a recession and they become paralysed.

EOS teaches us to deal with issues early & to be prepared.

Typically we teach our clients to look six to twelve months into the future when creating their?Accountability Chart. The Accountability Chart is how we structure the organisation with roles and responsibilities and put all the right people in the right seats.??

Under normal circumstances, the Accountability Chart includes identifying empty seats in the business to facilitate growth.

The Reverse Accountability Chart is the exact opposite. What would the company look like with 50% less revenue?

By teaching our clients The Reverse Accountability Chart, they are completely prepared for any economic downturn.

The idea behind this is not to expect that this will happen but to be prepared for it if it does, to ensure that you weather the storm & come out on the other side prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that always come out of a downturn.

Find out how to develop a reverse accountability chart here & remember that documenting your Reverse Accountability Chart in an emergency response plan is a key part of being a great leader.

However, it’s not a document you want to publicise. Keep it under wraps and only break it out if you have to.

In the event you need it, you’ll be glad you’ve already done all the thinking.

BETTER LIFE : Give up or Grow up!

A number of my clients & friends have been going through some rough times recently – not at work but personally. And when you’re a business owner or a leader at work, this can have a huge impact on your consistency, which has an overall impact on the business.

I’ve had a few of my own challenges in recent months, involving family & closing down an old business. I won’t go into the details but let’s just say there are times when I have felt like giving up.

“Tough times are a normal part of life. Much like the waves of the ocean, life has its share of ups and downs. Although the intensity of these difficult moments may vary, the solutions are the same and can be applied to any intense life situations.

When life is challenging, what do you do? The most tempting thing to do is to quit. You just want to stop everything, have a meltdown, and run away from problems, especially when it feels like there is no way out. Psychologists call this learned helplessness. You stop doing something about the issue, even when you are still capable of acting on it.”

In this article, Coach Dris, a mindset & performance coach, talks about what we can do about this.

“What I learned is we only have two choices when we are going through tough times: either you quit, or you keep on moving. We can choose to give up or grow from it.?

The best choice is to keep on moving, even if it’s just one step or one inch at the time.”

He offers 9 things you can do. Some of them, for us as Entrepreneurs, will be tough to take on board, however, speaking from personal experience (after losing my brother, my Mum, my business, my house & my car in the short space of 18 months, a couple of years ago) they do work.

My personal plea is to take #9 seriously…. Ask for help!

Asking for help seems to be viewed as a failing in NZ & it makes me angry. So try to reposition it.

People love to help?– Imagine how you feel when you get to help someone? You feel great right? So, why are you not letting people help you & allowing them to feel great? You’re ripping them off if you’re not asking for help!

Ok – so let’s finish with a bit of fun. No, I don’t have a pair of these, but the article popped up in my inbox & it tickled me – so I thought I’d share it.

Announced on?The Tonight Show?on Monday, the US$195 Gobstomper is a skate shoe that reveals different colours as the surface gray suede is worn away with use, much like a Gobstopper candy changes shades as its outer layers dissolve.

It’s just a bit of fun & maybe I might order myself a pair ??
