One of the first outcomes when working with clients one-on-one is to establish community values.
“What values inform your community’s thoughts, words, and actions?”
Often, it starts out with a blank stare. Then, we find a balance in their answers between established brand values and the new values of the community.
It’s not their fault. It’s not every day they consider having two sets of values under one roof.
Two sets of very similar values, to be clear. After all, your company or brand most likely ants to remain as efficient as possible, so use your established values as the template to shape the message aligning with your community’s needs, wants and outcomes.
Individual values, like enthusiasm, creativity, humility, and personal fulfillment, are among reasons to understand your community better. Is that why they’re here?
Then, determine your communities’ Relationship values. Relating to others is vital in a community setting. Does your new community seek openness, trust, generosity, and caring?
Once you have that, pair that information alongside your established Organizational values. Like how best to operate and grow your community. Do you provide information, teamwork, events, support? To what level of quality do you seek for your people?
Finally, one of the key parts of all great communities is giving back. What are your Societal values? This is how you relate to society and return value for future generations to ensure your collective of remarkable contributors remain intact.
As I often touch upon, community for your company or brand is about the people in it. And for them, they are there to grow and develop - whether in small doses or large. By first identifying, then communicating your values - you give them a chance to join the right community.
Values, as you know, have been important in your organization’s success up until now. Give your people the same opportunity to succeed by effectively establishing your community values.
