The Resurgence Trust
Reconnecting with the Living Planet - through Resurgence & Ecologist magazine, The Ecologist website and regular events.
As we approach the festive season, we invite you to reflect on the give and take of Nature, the nature of giving, and the giving of Nature.

Give and take
by Satish Kumar, Issue 324, January/February 2021
Satish Kumar reflects on the profound nature of generosity and the generosity of Nature, both of which he encountered during his 8,000-mile peace walk from India to the United States.
During this journey, Satish relied solely on the kindness of strangers and the bounty of Nature. Along his route, in places from Pakistan to Europe, he was gifted warmth, food and hospitality, reaffirming his belief in humanity’s innate generosity.

Change the story: gifts
Satish Kumar reflects on the bounty of life as a gift. He emphasises the abundance of blessings we receive from Nature and from life itself, urging us to recognise these gifts and reciprocate.
Filmed in Hartland, Devon, this video is part of Resurgence’s Change the Story series, aiming to inspire gratitude and environmental stewardship.

The Nettle Dress
Textile artist Allan Brown spent seven years making a dress by hand, using only the fibre of locally foraged stinging nettles. This is ‘hedgerow couture’, the greenest of slow fashion. It’s also the medicine that helped him survive the death of his wife, which left him and their four children bereft, and how he finds a beautiful way to honour her.
The Nettle Dress has been a grassroots, word-of-mouth sensation. Last year the film was screened in over 250 cinemas in the UK, reaching number 8 for documentaries in the box office — unheard of for a film about craft.
Now the film has been made available to watch online until 2 December 2024. Also included is a 30-minute pre-recorded Q&A session with Allan Brown and Dylan Howitt, the director of the film, with more of the background of the making of both the dress and the film.
Dylan described his experience in an article published in Issue 342 of Resurgence & Ecologist (Jan/Feb 2024), which is free to read online.
